http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/todd-akin-paul-ryan-mitt-romney.phpMissouri Republican Senate nominee Todd Akins claim that women who are victims of legitimate rape have biological defenses to prevent pregnancy and therefore dont need the legal right to have an abortion is already shaking up the Senate race in the Show Me State.
But its also perfectly timed to put heat on the Republican presidential ticket, given the recent selection of Rep. Paul Ryan and his especially conservative views on abortion.
Ryans abortion positions were already threatening to break out as a major issue in the campaign as Democrats seek to harness their advantage with women voters. Akins comments are likely to thrust a glaring spotlight onto Ryans views.
(Hours after he made the comments, Akin said he misspoke amid a firestorm.)
Ryan and Akin largely agree when it comes to abortion rights. Both believe abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape and incest. Both were co-sponsors of H.R. 3, the 2011 bill that would have limited the federal abortion coverage exemption only to victims of forcible rape and women whose physical health was in danger from her pregnancy, closing a supposed loophole in health-of-the-mother exemptions conservatives have been crowing about for years.
(snip)
On Sunday, just hours after Akins comments appeared online, the Obama campaign turned to Twitter to boost its messaging that the GOP wants to eliminate gains made in womens rights over the last half-century

(67,111 posts)free pass from voters IMO, because many voters don't seem to even know the real issues because there are sooo many lies, distortions and misinformation spread around. Case in point my sister who thought if she were a better wife her husband would not beat her ... now thankfully divorced. ... but the church taught her good wives don't get beaten by husbands.
This type of stuff is getting so out of control in this country, eventually, it's going to be so far over the cliff retrieval is not possible.

(67,111 posts)all marriages on earth in heaven. She had some serious indoctrination about marriage. I basically (politely) told her she was all F'ed up and she went into a crying spree, had to have her uncle come rescue her psyche. ... and this was at a wedding for one of my friends.

If you get pregnant you wanted it. If you aren't pregnant then you didn't have sex.
See the logic?
Well neither do I but it's how they think.

(6,286 posts)is stark raving mad. I tell you what, if either of my daughters need an abortion, they're going to get one, even if we have to leave this country to get it. I don't care what some meatslapping slack-jawed yokel says or who passes what law. Mind your own fucking business, Republicans! It's a damn good thing the country can't get pregnant because you assholes have been screwing it for decades!
