At WH, Schumer said publicly that he asked Trump point-blank in the Sit Rm today for 1 good reason not to accept bill reopening all gov agencies other than DHS. Source familiar says POTUS responded: "I would look foolish if I did that."

And I think "foolish" is way too kind.

(18,837 posts)I consider myself a reasonably intelligent, analytical, and empathetic person...but I'll never understand how "the wall" dug its talons so deep into "the base."
What we've already seen is that if he caves on this...and it doesn't look like he'll have much of a choice...right wing media will crucify him.
Reporting indicates that his dog and pony show in the Situation Room today did not further his cause.

(182,826 posts)They offered him $25B in exchange for the Dreamers - Miller talked him out of it
They offered $1.6B regular maintenance- he turned it down
Then HE felt like he had to make some big manly show of power - he ended up backed into a corner in an oval office
The family bailed on him for most of the holidays. His staff is leaving en masse and flipping him the bird on the way out. Even he knows it's not going well so he makes this show to appease their media.
Stupid. Hell he could have just not brought it up or told his base it was being done. Fact checkers would call BS and his base would ignore them.

(10,831 posts)Another confession.
He would look foolish because it's all about him, not the people he's put in financial harm, those who will resort to putting day-to-day expenses on credit cards or workers with medical deductibles and mortgages that they're unable to pay.
Because he'll look foolish or more accurately he'll look more foolish, more deluded than he already does. He's the most popular president in the history of the Republican Party?? America's approval numbers have skyrocketed because world-wide Trumpski is loved by all??
The man is not right in the head.
This wall is merely a vanity project with the lives of Americans and immigrants put at risk for the sake of saving face, making Ann Coulter and the whacko brigade happy.
The man is not right in the head and he's deliberately hurting others because of his massive, ridiculous ego. The main security risk is the man himself.
Maybe Pelosi & Schumer should allocate funds for a wall to be built around Trumpski and his ugly enablers. That I could support.

(10,831 posts)Remember the Puerto Rico debacle? People suffering and he wants to hand over the electric grid to a 2-man operation in Whitefish, Montana. Just a wee bit hinky. I wouldn't trust the man with a 20 dollar bill, let alone $5 billion. Plus, I've read the money that has already been allocated for border security has not been spent. Why are they sitting on it?
The whole thing stinks.
