Trump unloads on James Mattis, says he 'essentially' fired defense secretary

President Trump denounced former Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday, saying at a cabinet meeting he "essentially" fired the former Marine Corps general from the top Pentagon post.

"What's he done for me? How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good," Trump said, according to a Bloomberg News journalist, who reported a quote relayed by a colleague in the room.

"As you know, President Obama fired him, and essentially so did I," Trump said at the meeting, attended by Mattis' replacement, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.

Mattis announced Dec. 20 that he intended to resign, effective Feb. 28. His departure was hastened after Mattis publicly released his resignation letter, citing differences with Trump on "treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors."

in an obviously petulant way, of course. but moving up a departure date constitutes firing.

he fired mattis in part as retribution for the resignation letter, but also in part so he could make exactly this statement -- that mattis didn't quit; donnie fired him.

it was the classic immature boss's move: "oh yeah? well, you *can't* quit because you're *fired*!"
