A Florida man was booked on battery charges this week after he physically assaulted a McDonald’s worker during a dispute over a straw, an incident that has sparked outrage across social media.

The drama unfolded just after 6:50 p.m. at the McDonald’s restaurant at 4595 34th St S in St. Petersburg, Florida on Monday, according to witness Kinie Biandudi, who videoed the melee. The 54-second clip shows a white male customer reach across the counter and grab a Black female employee by her shirt, prompting the young woman to deliver several blows to the customer’s head.

“YES this really did happen last night for all those asking me … it all started because he wanted a straw!!!” Biandudi wrote on Facebook. “The young girl said she used to box🥊. After this fight, he came back and went behind the counter & tried to fight the manager. The guy left before the cops arrived.”

A Pinellas County Police report identified the suspect as 40-year-old Daniel Willis Taylor, who is not only accused of assaulting employee Yasmine James, but also kicking another female employee in the stomach. Taylor, whom the report lists as “transient,” reportedly became upset over the restaurant’s policy requiring customers to request drinking straws at the front.

Apparently St. Petersburg (where this incident took place) is following Seattle's example - straws by request by 2019, and banned by 2020.

Biandudi said the employee told the man it was policy not to have plastic straws out. St. Petersburg's city council recently passed a law that ordered restaurants only to hand out straws by request by 2019, before banning them all together by 2020, according to ABC affiliate WFTS.

ST. PETERSBURG — Say goodbye to plastic straws in the ‘Burg.

After months of discussions, St. Petersburg's City Council voted late Thursday night to ban single-use plastic straws as well as expanded polystyrene, more commonly known by its brand name Styrofoam. The straw ban will start in 2020, while the polystyrene ban will start in just a few weeks.

The ordinance will be rolled out in two phases: For the first year, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2019, St. Petersburg will be a straw-by-request-only city, meaning restaurants and other places can only give plastic straws to customers who ask for them. After that first year, though, businesses will be prohibited from offering plastic straws at all. That's the ban.

There are no penalties for violating the request-only portion of the ordinance for the first three months, so from Jan. 1 to March 31. Then, for the remainder of the first year, the city will issue warnings.

The real enforcement starts Jan. 1, 2020, when the ban kicks in. The first violation is a warning, the second will result in a $40 fine, and all subsequent violations within a year of the first violation will result in an $80 fine.

kind of kissed the guy's ass after the fight. I don't blame them, I know they're doing what they've been trained to; always kiss the customer's ass, no matter how abusive they are. I'm all for restraint and professional demeanor, but there is a limit, and it's crossed when somebody assaults a female employee.

But I see this as part of a larger problem. The rich white folks who run corporations like McDonald's want to squeeze every penny out of every customer they can, so they force their wage slave employees to kiss the ass of every customer they can, no matter how abusive or disruptive.

If I had been the manager of that girl I would have given that man three options:

Leave my business immediately.

Stay her and wait for the cops to show up.

Try that shit again and get carried out of here on a stretcher when we all stomp on your ass.
