I live in Massachusetts and Mitt Romney was a Northeast Republican Governor in every sense of the phrase.
He helps the rich, weakens unions, blows with the wind on social issues (liberal when it suits him, conservative when that suits him). He'll change his mind to fit the audience or the times, and explain that he's "evolved".
All that being said, you cannot find much fault in his personal life. He is truly a Mormon in that he is faithful to his wife and family and humble in all else. If he's going to criticize Trump for anything, that's OK with me. After all, he's not a Democrat so don't expect him to vote like one. But, if, like Flake, he can say that this asshole disgusts me, that puts him in the top 5 of Republican Senators in my book.
Of course, I'll take one of the most Conservative Democrats over any Republican, so being in the top 5 of Republican Senators is like being the least smelly skunk at a garden party.

(115,734 posts)Mittens wants to be president. If he primaries Trump and thereby divides and destroys the GOP, that's fine with me.

(2,574 posts)that he could defeat Trump in the primaries and then team up with Nikki Haley. That would be a formidable team. Personally, he is squeaky clean, but, as is clear, he supports the same insane policies that Republicans generally support. i fear he would appeal to a lot of "moderates" who would buy his patrician bearing and his thin veneer of competence and his opposition to Trump. In essence, Mittens by standing against Trump (actually, just Trump' style) now (and if he should get the primaries) stands to "redeem" the party . Romney is like the anti-Trump in his personal life but just like Trump in his political life - he never had a principle that he would not put a price tag on. He scares the hell out of me.

(115,734 posts)They will prevent him from getting the nomination. But the nomination fight will weaken the party, maybe tempt Mittens or someone else to go 3rd party.

(3,501 posts)There are a man or woman's positions which you may or may not agree with
There are the ethics and way they carry themselves.
I don't agree with almost anything Romney stands for, but he is an honorable man.
Trump has neither honor nor position to agree with. In fact in the honor department, I am seen politicians who went to prison with more ethics and morals than donald trump

(2,117 posts)I also suffered through his Governorship. Never voted for him, and never will. That said, I envy my unenrolled friends who will be able to choose a GOPuke ballot in next year's Presidential Primary, only so that they cab vote for ABT, (Anyone but Trump).

(15,286 posts)If there are "moderate" or never-Trumper Rs in the senate, they'll be attracted to him and form an opposition bloc dividing the senate GOP. Remember Utah is a red state, but it's not really a Trump state. Yesterday, I heard poll numbers cited that 64% of Utahans want Romney to be a check on Trump. Romney has the freedom to be independent.

I wish him well in 'checking' DT but I'll believe it when I see it.

(5,499 posts)That makes it tough to come in and stir things up. I bet McConnell does not like Romney. Romney and handsome and well spoken, while Mitch is neither of those.
And Romney couldn't beat Obama.
But to be fair, none of them could.
But if Romney knows Mitch doesn't like him, he'll work hard to be liked. Which is what Mitch wants.
