Somebody somehow hacked the DNC and the RNC. (The army-veteran organization VIPS published a report that the transfer-rate of the data somehow proves that it was done on-site, not online, but the report was later withdrawn.)
US intelligence claims to have evidence that it was the Russians.
Somehow the hacker Guccifer 2.0 got his hands on the DNC-emails.
Guccifer 2.0 claimed to be romanian but to linguistic experts it quickly became clear that he's not a native speaker of Romanian.
Somebody somehow gave the DNC-emails to Wikileaks.
When questioned about it, Julian Assange refused to either confirm or deny that Wikileaks got the emails from Guccifer 2.0.
(The journalist had a feeling as if Julian Assange wanted to preserve the possibility for anyone to take responsibility and take the fall.)
In the same interview however, Julian Assange insisted that the source who gave these emails to Wikileaks was not in the employ of a country's intelligence apparatus. (How would he know? Especially since Wikileaks has made clear on Twitter that they don't even share information about the identities of sources WITHIN Wikileaks.)

Furthermore it's interesting that whoever hacked the DNC and the RNC, had no interest in leaking the RNC-emails.
