(CNN)Now that the race for the 2020 Democratic nomination has officially started, one of the big issues that will likely come up is which candidate is the most electable.
One way to find that out is to see how the different possible candidates have done in the past. Of course, it's difficult to compare candidates when they run for different offices in different years.
There are, however, six potential 2020 Democratic contenders ran who ran for the US Senate in 2018.
The big takeaway from those results: Sens. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Sherrod Brown of Ohio are above-average candidates on the question of electability...

(2,708 posts)cnn link: Brown won his Ohio race by 7 points. That may not seem like a lot, but Ohio Democrats struggled in House races. All told, Republican House candidates in Ohio beat Democratic House candidates by 5 points. In other words, Brown did 12 points better than the baseline. Brown can rightfully claim that he flipped a red-leaning state blue in the midterms.
yes I think Sherrod Brown would be amongst best dem candidates. Biden is tops but his age (76 jan 2019) will be exploited by repubs even tho trump is at age parity, as Biden will be 78 come election 2020*.
I was trying to drum up support for hillary to choose brown as vice pres pick to perhaps pick up ohio (ugh), but a rock & hard place, since if he ran and won, ohio repub gov would have chosen a repub senator to replace him, and dems were desperately try to pick up senate seats, not lose them. Thus she went with Tim Kaine, good man, of Virginia, to play safe.
Regrettably I only endorse Sherrod Brown amongst the top 6 contenders in your cnn link, DSB; The others I think are either flashes in the pan (O'R, Gillibrand, Klobuchar) or hangers on like sanders. I do like warren personally a lot, but as president would foment vicious attacks from the right during her term.
Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota D +24 D +11 +13
Sherrod Brown, Ohio D +7 R +5 +12
Kirsten Gillibrand, New York D +34 D +29 +5
Beto O'Rourke, Texas R +3 R +6 +3
Bernie Sanders***, Vermont I +40 D +43 -3
Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts D +24 D +36 -12
I do like John Kerry again, qualified. And Joe Biden despite his age. Jamaican Kamela Harris, but not Cory Booker, something missing as presidential material. I did vote obama twice, even campaigned for him in pennsy first time, and I surely do miss him.
*I was disheartened when ruth ginsburg decided to stay on as justice under obama. I think her age would have been reason enough to retire & have obama appoint a liberal justice. Now, as we've seen in the past couple months with bruised ribs & benign lung cancer scares, she is skating on not so thick ice to get to next election.
Though, according to the 'biden corollary according to mcconnell', all she needs do is make it to say march of 2020, a 'short 14 months', before becoming incapacitated in some fashion (we all hope not), for her subsequent replacement to be appointed by the winner of the 2020 election (remember garland delay). At least that's how it's supposed to work. Does anyone here think trump would hold off till the 2020 election? I don't for a minute. He would appoint one & try to ram it thru the senate, and he would likely win due to right wing cretinism in the republican controlled senate.

(6,855 posts)But I think ANY candidate is going to have to come out with clear strategy on trade.
Hillary was against the TPP. We know that Obama backed the TPP to counter China's economic strength.
Brown has credibility in the rust belt, but what does he say about tariffs and trades?
Part of our problem in the Democratic Party is to have a clear message on trade. We are conflicted, as is much of the country, but having no message cost us dearly in the Midwest and Pennyslvania.

(14,317 posts)I like him a lot. He speaks credibly on labor and economic issues. He could deliver a lot of states for us in the midwest, which would ensure our victory.
We have no shortage of good candidates, and several great ones. Brown is one of the greats.
