Ending the Shutdown Is Up to McConnell
January 1, 2019 at 8:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

Stan Collender: “First, in spite of the polls showing that he’s being held responsible for the government shutdown and his pre-shutdown bragging that he would be proud to be blamed for it happening, Donald Trump apparently believes that he’s winning the shutdown fight. He currently has little incentive to do any differently than he’s currently doing.”

“Second, after taking their oaths of office, the new House Democratic majority’s immediate effort this week will be to pass legislation that, if enacted, will reopen the federal government. Therefore, House Democrats also have no reason to do anything differently.”

“Third, the reopen-the-government effort will then fall directly into Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) lap. With the House likely to pass something that almost certainly doesn’t have the votes to pass the Senate, it will be up to McConnell to negotiate some kind of deal with either Trump or House Democrats, take the heat for not being able to do either or cause his Republican majority to take more of the blame for not being able to resolve the situation.”

The more republicans will lose their jobs in the 2020 election, especially with trump tweeting and talking . The Democrats know this too, so why would they make any deal with trump and the gop today? That would be stupid for them to do now, and lett trump and the gop off the hook. What trump would do if he got the funding is just like he always does, cuts all costs on its construction for them to funnel more money into his pocket by pressuring any contractors in order to get the contract , they have to pay him by giving to his campaign, which he then funnels into his pockets. He's wanting more money for himself , and is all this is about. Corruption.

Why not push the narrative that we Democrats just won a huge election. 9 million more people voted for Democrats, the people have spoken, they have rejected the GOP/Trump party, they want change. For crying out loud let's not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Pass the same fucking bill the Senate recently approved unanimously and then let Republicans explain why they are suddenly against a bill they recently unanimously passed. This isn't rocket science.

WE NEED TO CONTROL THE NARRATIVE. The narrative must be that elections have consequences and that Democrats have a mandate. Screw capitulating with traitorous Republicans, especially Mitch McConnell.

The forces of capital are aligned against Democratic policies. The best that can be done is to push back at every opportunity.

and it passes the Senate, which I believe it would if it ever hits the Senate floor, would Trump have the guts to veto it? I'm not so sure he would. If he does the shutdown is undeniably linked to him and that won't be popular and that's all that Trump cares about, his popularity.

that doesn't have the votes to pass the Senate."

Why make that statement? Democrats are passing the same bill that the Senate previously passed unanimously. Why is that same bill no longer acceptable? What changed? The only thing that changed was that Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Fox News didn't like the bill. That should be our narrative. That should be what cable news anchors should be asking Senate GOP/Trumpers. I think we make a mistake using talking points that are going to be used by the GOP/Trump party. JMO.

1 person alone. Millions of voters are represented in the Senate and McConnell will be thumbing his nose at them. Put things up for a vote and if the fool decides to veto them allow the representatives of the people to either override the veto or sustain it.

GOP could have passed it in the Senate with the nuclear option.

They did pass a bill without funding his wall.

The new Senate will be faced with the bill that was passed by the last Senate, returned to them from the new House. They can either choose to hypocritically vote against to give cover to Dumbshitler, or pass it again and shove the mess onto the baby in the White House. I suppose Turtleman can sit on it and not bring it up for a vote, but how long can he sit on that fence post? That will be in cartoons before a week has passed if he balks.

Leaving Chinless Mitch in a tough spot. Either sit on a bill that they wrote or dump the problem to Trump.

The old House Bill with the $5 Billion is expired, and not likely to every seen the light of day again.

The whole deal is if Mitch or Trump want to continue the shutdown over funding for a useless wall that they will never get.

The $5.6 Billion for the wall doesn't exist anymore. It died with the last House. You can continue to mourn it, but it isn't coming back.

It went to live on a farm, if that makes it easier for you.

No changes.
That way they have no reason to say no.
it's the one they passed before and Trump originally said he'd sign.
Call them out on that.
Don't change the bill and just shove it down their throats.
