Baptist minister slams Jerry Falwell Jr for 'disaster' promise to put Trump over Jesus

ASouthern Baptist minister has spoken up to “vigorously critique” an interview in which evangelical leader Jerry Falwell Jr. said that he would support anything President Donald Trump decides to do as president.

Alan Cross is a Southern Baptist pastor in Montgomery, Alabama.

“Wow,” was his first response to Falwell’s interview with the Washington Post.

He then went on to analyze how Falwell’s position was a “clearly articulated” version of the “approach German Lutherans took as Hitler rose to power.”

I'm so sick of this bullcrap that the Democratic Party does not support the military. I'll probably get alerted for this but the military industry has established such a complex web of suppliers that I don't think there is one congressional district in the U.S. that does not have some economic interest in the machine. The budget increases every year with support from both parties.

And Jerry Falwell Jr. is another example of the great American meritocracy.

About 2:55 on the timeline.

"Let me tell you," he continued. "If Jesus Christ gets down off the cross and told me Trump is with Russia, I would tell him, hold on a second, I need to check with the president if it is true. That is how confident I feel in the president."

I've never heard of such a thing. In Alabama, no less.

Wow! He's probably taken some heat over the years. A strong person. Good for him for speaking up.

almost 20 years ago, that encouraged southern Baptists of good conscience, to break ranks with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Mr. Carter is the highest-profile defection yet from the Southern Baptist Convention. He not only made his born-again Baptist beliefs a part of his public life during and after his presidency, but also helped move evangelical Christianity closer to the American mainstream.

''He made talking about Jesus Christ a part of our public discourse in politics,'' said Douglas Brinkley, a historian at the University of New Orleans who has written about Mr. Carter's postpresidential years.

But Mr. Carter's decision to dissociate himself from the national denomination is the latest sign that as conservatives have wrested control of the group over the last 15 years, liberal and moderate believers are giving up hope of having a home among them.

In recent years, a handful of churches have broken off from the national group or joined moderate national networks, like the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, based in Atlanta, of which Mr. Carter is a member. The executive committees of the Texas and Virginia state Baptist conventions have rejected the national group's latest doctrinal changes, officials with the national convention said.

And just over 10 years ago, he and former President Clinton founded a new organization - http://newbaptistcovenant.org/

So there are Baptists who have seen the light and refused to drink the GOP koolaid.
