Because that's what the Republicans are going to do. Have we gotten smart enough to not carry their water for them this time around?

(59,507 posts)Clinton DID in her 3 am attack on Obama, claim that she AND JOHN McCAIN were ready on day one and implied Obama was not. Bernie, on the other hand, mostly stayed away from any mention of what he in a debate when specifically asked as speaking about her damn emails.
Clinton surrogate Bob Kerrey actually spoke of Obama going to a madrassa. Clinton 2008 was far more negative in its attacks on Obama than Sanders was against Clinton in the 2016 primaries -- and Obama then made her Secretary of State!

(59,507 posts)on the Democratic side as unusual in quality or quantity. I think there was actually MORE attacks in 2008 between the candidates than in 2016 -- and they were harsher. That is MY opinion.
I don't think Sanders will get the momentum he would need to get the nomination. If anything, his being in might disadvantage others on the progressive side of the party as Sanders will hold a large share of their votes in the early stage when every serious candidate will need to show significant support. It is entirely possible to be a serious politician with a great resume but to not see (or get) a viable path to getting enough support. An example is Joe Biden who in 2004 tested the water but saw John Kerry, who shared his foreign policy expertise, getting more traction - and then in 2008, Hillary Clinton was the experience candidate. In both cases, had they dropped out, Biden would likely have gained some of their support.
I would guess the beneficiary of Sanders opting out would be Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren -- and for the more extreme Sanders supporters, Tulsi Gabbard.

(11,175 posts)The people who are constantly bashing Bernie for his campaign should watch those clips. Then they should consider how Bernie would have campaigned (about the emails and other things) if he actually had been the evil monster they try to paint him as.

(11,175 posts)My point is that Clinton's personal attack on Obama in the 2008 primary was more negative than any ad that Bernie ran in 2016. Anyone who criticizes Bernie while giving Clinton a pass is applying a double standard.
ETA: The context was that I was responding to a post that's since been removed, which bashed Bernie concerning the 2016 primary.

Better bona fides than Obama when he ran...she, much like Obama, knows how to speak to youth and to truth to power...and I see her hard-scrabble upbringing in Oklahoma as a positive to counter all the Massachusetts liberal label we know will be thrown around by the media on behalf of Republicans.

It's up to us to build a legislative agenda and a campaign strategy that can help any Democrat win.
Kudos to her for standing up. We should be standing up too. Negative ads are a part of the process these days, but they can be overcome with an outstanding campaign.
I am a big fan of Warren, although name recognition is probably the first big challenge. I think a Sherrod Brown-Amy Kloubuchar ticket is unbeatable. With that said, Elizabeth Warren is a wise and effective advocate for policies that benefit Main Street economies. I am looking forward to her campaign.
BeyondGeography
(39,386 posts)An all-Midwestern ticket with an economic populist up top...we could do much worse. As in a career prosecutor from California with no meaningful standing on economic issues. Not seeing the wisdom of Harris for Prez. This election will be about strengthening governments hand in relation to capital. Warren has spent a lifetime thinking about that.
Warren will force the entire field to up their game on the economy which is where the election will be decided. Were fortunate to have her run.
BlueWI
(1,736 posts)I am not yet very familiar with Harris, so I would like to learn more about what her issues of focus and governing personality might be. I have learned more about Warren through her national profile for several years.
A Midwestern ticket like Brown-Kloubuchar would be very hard to beat in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and even Ohio and Iowa. Any viable candidate needs to demonstrate potential strength in these states.

People who are propping this thing up are supporting the rather racist and discredited "one drop rule" from the 19th century.

(34,185 posts)She only claimed that she had an NA ancestor which the DNA evidence supported.
She did not say that she was a Native American.
She did not claim tribal rights. She did not try to benefit from her ancestor's NA status.
Tarc
(10,478 posts)she did go rather near it.
I'm seeing that a lot and don't understand why it's bad. Could you explain, please?
Tarc
(10,478 posts)It is a racist, antiquated 19th century notion that one ancestral person of color automatically makes the person in question that as well. Warren should have simply said something like "I am proud of my family and the stories my grandmother told us about our heritage" and just left it as that.
Trump, Shiva, and the rest of the alt-right ar being horribly racist about this, there's no denying that, but by taking the bait and actually taking that damnable DNA test, she played into their hands. This is all that will be talked about in her presumptive presidential candidacy. Warren will constantly be on the defensive.
