Will Sears survive? The world will probably know within a few weeks.
On Friday night, a hedge fund controlled by Eddie Lampert bid $4.4 billion for the company's operating assets. The deal by Sears' chairman would keep about 425 Sears and Kmart stores open for business 260 or so fewer than the retailer had when it filed for bankruptcy on October 15.
Lampert is Sears' biggest creditor, but he's not the only one. Sears owes billions of dollars to thousands of vendors, landlords and others. Many of them believe it would be better to shut all of the remaining stores and sell off Sears' assets to raise cash to repay the debts.
The life-or-death decision will be made by US Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain as soon as January.

(9,273 posts)Still miss it. Easy parking, no lines, nobody went there. Hate Walmart.
The closest Sears (half hour away) is still open. When the kids were little I used to go there all the time for clothes. Back then (80s and 90s) sears kids clothes were high quality and well priced. I should go there one more time before the inevitable.
My daughter wouldnt dream of buying stuff at Sears for her little ones.

(38,958 posts)along with The Shop n Save (Super Valu getting out of Retail) across the parking lot, the Lowes, Pier One and O'Charleys across the street. Previously closed are the Arby's and a local bakery, but our City Council pats itself on the back for the opening of Raisin Cane's, Chick Fil A, Culver's, Popeyes and MOD Pizza. I guess there is enough market and sales taxes in the fast food to support the community and all the City Services?

(67,112 posts)incredible opportunity they had to be an Amazon. They had everything and to me totally blew it. Their catalog was incredible. They should have made a massive online effort to digitize their catalog, etc, etc. with a website much like Amazon has. They had a seamless process from vendor/manufacturing all the way to customer support/repair. What a missed opportunity.

(14,860 posts)while making it very easy to order online and return stuff. So many retailers' online catalogs are a PITA to browse. It's much more enjoyable to flip through a paper catalog while drinking coffee or whatever.
