Basketball star LeBron James has apologised after sharing a lyric about "Jewish money" on social media - saying he thought it was a compliment.
James was called out over the lyric - which comes from a song by US rapper 21 Savage - after he shared it with his 45.8m followers on Instagram.
US journalist Darren Rovell was among those drawing attention to the post, saying it was "offensive".
But James said it was not his intent "to hurt anyone" with Saturday's post.
"Apologies, for sure, if I offended anyone," he told sports channel ESPN on Sunday. "That's not why I chose to share that lyric. I always (post lyrics). That's what I do. I ride in my car, I listen to great music, and that was the byproduct of it.

(53,975 posts)When it comes to homophobia and anti-Semitism, most people just don't give a shit and feel it is OK to use both, no matter their side.

(53,975 posts)How good of you to be so open and understanding. Still doesn't mean others get it. Too many don't.

(26,060 posts)Did this lyric come up as disgusting BEFORE James made it so famous? Why the fuck wasn't there outrage BEFORE this episode? How well known is this rapper? Looks like nobody had a problem until now and a THAT is the most disturbing part.

(25,586 posts)that genre since the days of Public Enemy. We live in an anti-Semitic world, and unfortunately art is sometimes going to reflect that tendency.

(26,060 posts)Was true about rap. Just know it wasn't my thing. But yes, the anti semitism has always been around and has only gotten worse lately....or more open. Rap has a lot of company on that score.

(16,439 posts)The OTT animus in the thread should be directed at the guy WHO WROTE THE FUCKING LYRICS.
BTW, LeBron has been the subject of a lot of positive threads here. I love how you step out of line once and its the guiitione from some. Because thats not completely irrational or anything.

(26,060 posts)Trump has engaged in the same meme about Jews and money so there you go....it's everywhere. BTW- James got hurt in last nights game. I hope it's not serious although Knick fans famously hate James.

(53,975 posts)What is problematic, other than the anti-Semitic problems, are those who seem to have a problem with calling out the anti-Semitism. They see anyone calling out anti-Jewish bigotry as "over the top", demonstrating why more than a few have no problem with anti-Semitism as long as it doesn't come from the right.

(26,060 posts)Seems many are far more concerned WHERE it's coming from. I just saw the Chicago Woman's March was cancelled because of their problems in that area. NONE of the women I know in NY are currently planning on attending the walk in NY. Hearing one of their "leaders" say Zionists can't be feminists is making their heads explode.

(30,540 posts)"If I offended anyone". Can't these non-apologists just acknowledge that what they said was offensive and they're very sorry and will never do it again, that shouldn't be so difficult!

(99,711 posts)I am always vigilant when it comes to bigotry, whenever it raises its ugly head. LeBron has been in the public eye for nearly twenty years. This is the first such instance. He can learn and move on.
