House GOP considered putting legislation on floor w/$5-B for border wall as Trump demanded. But leaders eventually told the president that there were not enough votes to pass it
in other words, Pelosi wasnt bluffing. she knew where the votes were.

United we stand, divided we fall.
Journalists should start asking Congressional Republicans if they favor impeachment, there is enough evidence out there right now to warrant it, right?
I'm against the narrative that impeachment talk should only be whispered in dark places.

They own it, the american people know it. We can live with it until trump caves again.....but its up to the GOP in congress to make THAT happen

(82,849 posts)It's almost as if Speaker-to-be-again Pelosi knows more about the House and vote counts than the Emperor Trump. How can that be, if not witchcraft? Why isn't the FBI investigating this?! Unfair! It's rumored that Pelosi uses Arabic numerals in her infernal calculations. Sorcery!

(16,124 posts)well, pretty much the one thing, when she said impeachment was off the table and she wouldn't pursue anything against W and his cohorts, but I sincerely doubt she says things that she doesn't know the answer to.
She doesn't come across as someone who bothers to bluff.

(3,630 posts)There's a place for activists to agitate for things that Pelosi knows aren't (yet) going to happen, but it's Pelosi's job to make sure we get as much of our agenda signed into working law as possible. Our Representatives are there to represent us, after all. But Pelosi's job is larger; she needs to get as much of our agenda as possible signed into actual law, and wasting time with stuff that can't pass a floor vote or move through the Senate doesn't do that. That means she needs to know who is doing what on both sides of the aisle in both houses of Congress, and she is a world class player on that field. By comparison Ryan and McTurtle are amateurs trying to play checkers with a chess set.

(53,851 posts)to vote for impeachment. It's likely that some Dem reps will favor a floor vote.
Speaker Pelosi will have to handle that as, unlike the House, in the Senate 2/3s of the votes are needed to convict.

(4,965 posts)My argument for a new Speaker has been about trying to engage the younger voters and to have leadership in the party that more represents the population of Dems (i.e. fewer people that are old and white and male).
But, hey, if building straw men makes you happy, have at it, I guess.
Me.
(35,454 posts)and there's nothing straw manish about that. And as I didn't address my comment to you, maybe you feel defensive about it. And younger is not a sure-all, cure-all, especially without experience.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,965 posts)Not saying younger is a cure all. But we have a distinct problem in that the make up of the House and Senate is WAY more old, white, and male than the population. Dems could make steps to at least remedy that in the leadership.
And as you posted on a discussion board in which anyone can reply to you, whether you addressed your comment to me is inconsequential as to my reply. It's what a discussion board is about.
Me.
(35,454 posts)in regard to I should've used sarcasm smilie though age is often acquainted with being feeble. I also notice you've moved your point to being about white and male, which doesn't apply to her.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,965 posts)I think I've been pretty consistent that we have a congress that is too old, white, and male. She meets two of those. We can do better. We need to do better.
Me.
(35,454 posts)I don't think we'll ever see the likes of her again and I want her to stay as long as she is able to do the job as well as she has been. I know she has agreed to 2 more but we'll see. I suspect the ones going will be the so-called rebels

I wouldnt blame anyone whose first instinct is to hesitate about this. Weve learned not to take politicians word for it - particularly from experiencing trump. So little truth and honesty out there these days! Im not surprised that it isnt recognized right away.
And she was RIGHT, TOO. Thats because Nancy Pelosi has been around. Shes been at this for a LOOONNNNNNNNNG time. She grew up with it in Baltimore, with a dad and a brother who were mayors. I bet they talked politics at the breakfast table!
Sometimes, taking advantage of what an older person brings to the table is a good thing. Change simply for the sake of change is often ill-advised. One can certainly go ahead and place ones bets with the rookie or the prospect with minimal experience. Or choose the nice young horse that is new to the mountain trail and isnt familiar doesnt know where all the safest footfalls are. Id rather stick with a proven winner. Who knows the ropes in her bone marrow.
And for those wanting change, okay! Right HERE! THIS is a big one. Especially considering what weve been up against, til now.

(6,207 posts)Combine what Pelosi knew about the House and what Trump was hearing from McTurtle in the Senate HE KNOWS the wall is dead. Trump kept repeating "I need 10 dems in the senate".
Clearly the votes do not exist in Congress to give him a wall.
IMO he is pissed not because he really wants a wall. What he really wants is kick back money from contractors who would build the wall.
It is now and has always been about the money [He] "wants his fucking money!".
