Make sure glitter is actually edible before you eat it, FDA warns

Saturday, December 15, 2018 10:07AM

The holidays are a glitzy, festive time, but health officials are warning Americans to think twice before using glitter to add a sparkly touch to their holiday baking.

In a consumer update, the Food & Drug Administration offered guidelines to help bakers determine exactly which types of glitter are edible and which are better left for craft projects.

Because it's technically a food product, edible glitter is legally required to include a list of ingredients. According to the FDA, edible glitter often includes the following ingredients: sugar, acacia (gum arabic), maltodextrin, cornstarch and color additives.

Additionally, edible glitter should be clearly labeled as such. Phrases like "non-toxic" or "for decorative purposes only" do not indicate that something is edible, the agency warned.

Just from an average point of view, eating holiday glitter did not seem to be a problem when I was a kid.

I suppose we should be glad we still have an FDA at all during these times of Trump and GOP governance, but I wish our collective behavior did not make it necessary for them to issue warnings which equate to "make sure your food is food"

But we never studied glitter eating or not when I was in school. As a matter of fact, eating never was discussed in any manner.

you have to be careful even if buying from a bakery supplier. They also carry the non-toxic type.

A friend and I were celebrating after a long hiking trip at a fancy restaurant and the dessert was a round chocolate sphere filled with chocolate ice cream and topped with gold flakes. The shell was melted open with hot fudge at the table.

Thankfully gold is safe to eat. I had no idea that was even done prior to that dessert.
