Judge says he will allow Cohen to voluntarily surrender on March 6.
Remember, the high end of the sentencing guideline range discussed at the start of the hearing was 63 months -- more than five years.
While three years is significant, it is on the lower end of the sentencing recommendations
Cohen gets 2 months concurrent for lying to Congress.
Cohen also hit with forfeiture of $500,000, restitution of $1.4 million and a fine of $50,000.
Pauley sentences Cohen to 36 months.
Cohen appears to be going to prison. Judge Pauley says a message needs to be sent here.
"While Mr. Cohen was taking steps to mitigate his criminal conduct by pleading guilty and volunteering useful information to prosecutors, that does not wipe the slate clean," Pauley said.
Judge says he cannot agree with defense that prison time unwarranted.
Judge says he can't consider possible future cooperation by Cohen.

It's pretty bad.

(34,137 posts)Of course not - Cohen had plenty of chances to come clean before this. He refused to fully divulge what he knew about possible Trump crimes in New York. Even if he has a come to Jesus moment once he steps through those prison doors, it is too fucking late.

(65,168 posts)The judge can't consider it for that reason either. Manafort promised to cooperate and then lied to investigators and shared information to disrupt their further efforts.
If the judge took future cooperation into consideration, and he didn't really help much, the sentence would have already been laid forth.
So, yeah, the judge couldn't have done that.

(12,344 posts)And although the judge can't consider future cooperation, if he does continue to cooperate, he can asked for a reduced sentence afterward.

(42,759 posts)It actually is quite common for individuals convicted of non-violent crimes, who are out on bond, to be given anywhere from 1 to 3 months from the date their sentence is handed down until the date they have to report to prison.

(37,648 posts)can he? He can write one, and it would sell. But isn't there a law you can't profit from your crimes by writing a book? Maybe that's only before you serve the full sentence.
OTOH, maybe a movie will be made, and he can be a consultant on it.
Otherwise, without a law license, how is there even hope that he can pay that restitution?
Oh, wait. He owns some ritzy condos, I think. There you go. He can have a fire sale.

(42,759 posts)The criminal information stated that his tax evasion resulted in his not paying $1.4 million in taxes owed.
If he behaves, which I have no doubt he will, he'll be out in 18 months.
