the Democrats like him."
You know it's gonna' happen so lets deal with it.
Yeah, he does resemble Bobby Kennedy.
A few generations know what Bobby Kennedy looked like only from pictures and films. But let's never underestimate the scum who call themselves Republicans.
They will undoubtedly jump on the look-alike issue, and tell us that Beto is an empty suit who just happens to look like some dead Dem "hero."
Some here will fault and attack me for this post. But the reality is that he does look similar to Bobby Kennedy and it's just a matter of time before Republicans find a way to attack O'Rourke, if they're not already doing it.
So how do we counter the attack of the criminal party?
Beto O'Rourke is Not Bobby Kennedy. He is his own man with his own ideas, beliefs, convictions, values and identity and "looking like someone" is out and out bullshit. No Dem is stupid enough to vote for someone because of who they might resemble.
On the other hand, if Republicans could find someone who looked like Ronald Reagan, they'd put him on the ballot in a heartbeat.
Having said all this, we know that Republicans are among the worst pricks in the world. So we damn well better be ready with some good comebacks to whatever they throw at us on this stupid fucking topic.

(548 posts)doesn't matter who he "looks like." He is his own man with leanings like Bobby Kennedy and Barack Obama. Doesn't get any better for we Dems.

But let's face it. If Jesus pulled off that "second coming" thing and somehow became the Democratic nominee, they'd try to crucify him. Again.

(15,063 posts)We can't just say "Fuck their attacks." We've got to hit back at them as hard and ruthlessly as possible.
These pricks have been doing this to us for many decades. Time we used truth as a weapon. And past time to use truth to "go for their throats."
Between Fox, hate radio, and online lunatic sites, they will always hang onto a minority of uneducated people. But we must find a way to reach everyone, uneducated, smart, or whatever and show them that the Democratic Party can and will make a better world for everyone.
Just saying "Fuck them," ain't enough. We've got to actively go after them and destroy the evil they represent.
And then, hopefully, a reborn/decent Republican Party will come into being. After all, we need a sane, reasonable opposition party to prevent us from becoming what it is we hate.

(45,120 posts)He and Beto look nothing alike. Do not hold your breath waiting for a reborn/decent Republican party. Not going to happen.

(83,933 posts)18. Tell them the truth. Bobby Kennedy has been dead for 50 years and is a decayed corpse.
Your post startles me. I am appalled that you consider a great man nothing but a "decayed corpse."

Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

(45,120 posts)My problem, if it can be called that is I actually pay attention to politicians before I give my support and I don't idolize them, neither do I demonize them. I'm not weak minded enough to let the likes of David Sirota, Tom Watson and the Jackass Whisperer influence which politician I support.

(145,619 posts)sanders is busy selling books right now. I doubt that sanders would actually comply with the new DNC rule and formally agree in writing to become a member of the Democratic Party, agree to run as a member of the Democratic Party and agree to govern if elected as a member of the Democratic Party. I also doubt that sanders will release his tax returns so as to get onto the ballot in a number of key blue states
However, this poll is not great news for sanders

(15,063 posts)it's probably because it was meaningless in a Texas only race.
And maybe I'm paranoid to think the Republicans will try to make something of this in a national race.
Beto isn't a "front runner." Yet. There are a few dozen Dems who are in the game.
However, It will eventually come down to two or three, and I believe Beto will be one of them.
Soooo, if you haven't heard this before, it's probably because Texas Republicans didn't give a damn who Bobby Kennedy was. Or, perhaps, they just didn't want to remind any Dem voters who he was. Whatever.
But if Beto becomes a "finalist" in the Dem race, I believe this Bobby Kennedy thing may come up.
My reason for this OP is because I believe he'll become a finalist and the Bobby Kennedy thing will come up. And I believe the Republicans will try to use it to slime him. You may ask how they could do this, but they are experts at getting people to see "good" as "poison." This is what they do. This is who they are. And this is what we must fight to the bitter end.

So we're talking about a man who is considered a total prick by many. Yet, he was reelected.
I guess the only explanation is that the majority of voters want a Senator who will stand against everything that is decent, fair, and right. They want this prick as their Senator, even if they hate him.
How to overcome hatred, bigotry, racism, and pure idiocy is a problem in America today. Texas just showed us that the voting majority is not yet ready for that "human decency thing."
But they're not alone. Many of what we call "red states" still need to catch up with the 21st Century.

(22,274 posts)voters to flip that election. We worked our tails off to get every vote out we possibly could but fell short. Our party's resident political junkie is confident Tarrant county had enough non voting Democrats for Beto to win.
Cruz really hammered the border, lying about Beto wanting Open Borders
He hammered Medicare For All, lying that Beto wanted to give it free to people who haven't yet worked all their lives for it.
He used every lie and weasley snide remark possible to smear Beto and make voters scared of him. It worked on just enough rural voters to make that 214,000 vote margin happen.
Despite the huge turnout compared to 2014, we still just quite didn't get there.
Beto worked so hard and his family gave up nearly 2 years of family life - he totally rewrote the book on campaigning though and I expect to see that reflected in the 2020 campaigns. If Beto could do everything he did here, anyone can do those same things in a smaller state and kick serious ass.

(11,949 posts)Couldnt really tell you what Bobby Kennedy looked like. Dont much care.
Most voters, including Democratic voters, could not write a short paragraph on the history of Bobby Kennedy. I could, but like most DUers I am a political junky. But do not really have a mental image of him. I was 3 when he was killed.

(54,084 posts)And it was always Bobby, not Robert Kennedy. Peoples' eyes glazed over with such a overwhelming longing when they talked about him. As I studied the history, I understood the transformative power of his vision, and how his murder only added to that mythos.
I've been following Democratic politics closely for the last 40 years. There's this wonderful Jules Feiffer line about how "our loins still ache for Bobby." I think that was still true until 2000 or so.
Something about the Republican Party turning into full-time morons in the White House changed our taste to wanting smart capable leaders. Times change, but they do so slowly
