Dog waited weeks for owners to return to home burned by wildfire

K9 Paw Print Rescue/Facebook

By Eric Ting, SFGATE

A dog named Madison that was left behind in the Camp Fire in California was found alive and waiting for his owners to return to their charred home.

Rescue organization K9 Paw Print Rescue wrote in a Facebook post that Madison's owners were unable to return home when the fire started, and all they could do was "hope and pray" their dog would be all right.

Shayla Sullivan, a volunteer with K9 Paw Print Rescue, helped locate the family's other dog, Miguel, and attempted to lure Madison back to the property with food and water.

After speaking with one of the owners, Sullivan decided to leave an article of the owner's clothing on the property as well.

Shayla Sullivan? to CAMP FIRE Paradise Ca Area LOST FOUND ANIMALS

Do we all remember Miguel the guardian dog that was one of my tickets? He had a brother named Madison that we had been looking for. I kept Andrea’s ticket the entire time I was “officially” inside. Each other time I was inside, I would return and put out fresh food and water. The rescue in charge wanted to close his ticket, but I didn’t give up hope and kept him on my list when inside . I’ve also been scouting ALL of the FB found pages in hopes he might turn up. After all, Miguel had turned up in Citrus Heights. I had sighted Madison a few times deep in the Canyon BUT knew he took his job seriously and wasn’t going to be an easy catch. After meeting Andrea in person when I took Miguel to her, I had the idea of placing an article of clothing I was wearing when I hugged her that would smell like her to keep Madison’s hope alive until his people could return. WELL, I’m so HAPPY to report that Andrea was allowed to return to her property today and THERE MADISON WAS!!!! He had stayed to protect what was left of his home, and NEVER gave up on his people! I’m so happy I’m crying as I write this! He didn’t give up through the storms or the fire! A LOOOOONG month it must have been for him! 😔

I am sure as more people return the Furr Babies that survived the fire WILL know their people are back! Ignatious did and NOW Madison! Here’s to many more reunions ahead! Keep the HOPE alive! ❤Shannon Jay

As an animal lover, I truly hate stories that give us the beginning of a story and then leave us hanging, wondering what happened. So glad that Madison was reunited with his family.

I went back each day, calling for them. Simba showed up about 2 days after the fire, and his brother, Mouse, showed up the next day. I was able to pick both of them up. Had to board them at the vet's for several days until we were offered a place to stay at a neighbor's who was out of town.

After about three weeks we moved to a rental that happened to be at the dead end of a street which was near the dead end of our street where the house burned. When we would let Mouse go out, he would head over to the burned house and stay there most of the day, then come back to the rental house in the late afternoon. He did that day after day after day for as long as we lived in the rental--about 6 months--until the insurance company finally gave us the ok to have the remains of the house demolished and removed from the site. He didn't go back after that.

Animals are amazing.

Anyone who says animals don’t have a strong family bond with heir humans are plain ignorant.

I'm so glad both dogs made it okay.

I think my dog would panic and end up who knows where. But I don't know. Leaving the clothing with her scent on it was a good idea.

Good boy. A very good boy. I'm going to hug my dog, now...who I found on the street 11 years ago.
