(4,516 posts)There was a law passed in 2013 that local governments have 20 sum years to pay their unfunded liabilities. My county is taking only 13 years.
We dont talk about taking away government pensions or unions here unless you are a repub. They dont have much say here.

(82,849 posts)Folks go to work for the government, usually at less than they could make in the private sector. But in exchange for that sacrifice, they get civil service protection and a promise of a pension when they retire. Public employees aren't generally in line for bonuses or extraordinary pay raises.
Then after completing their careers and looking forward to the leisure of retirement, in comes the governor or the legislature, and they want to terminate their obligation to their retirees because now it's too expensive to deliver on their promise.
