After all, he-who-cannot-show-his-face in normal anthropological, socialized, civilized groups couldn't keep his "executive time" instead of attending a funeral.
Counting the ways the Village (he couldn't do it without them) propped him up to comply:
* Somebody *big* had to die, big (in rank anyway) enough to make it impossible for him to withhold the presence of the squatter-in-office.
* Somebody in the wife role, growing into holding him up, forcing herself to hold his hand, and probably had to be recruited herself to force him to go in the first place.
* Many somebodies in the humanity group have to control the hackles his intrusion naturally arouses to model acceptable behavior to him.
* Somebody has to be a Wall of praetorian guards around him, keeping him in. (Nobody wants to get in with him anyway.)
