To those writing in The Sentinel to support Chick-fil-A’s Dan Cathy and accuse us “liberals”
of being intolerant: Actions speak louder than words. We have no problem with Mr. Cathys words or his right to say what he thinks. Our issue is with his actions.
WindShape, Cathys foundation, gave nearly $2 million to anti-gay groups that attempt to marginalize gays, denying them respect and recognition. One of the groups Cathy supported is the Family Research Council. The FRC is considered a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its continued propagation of lies about the gay community, including the FRC leaders who call for criminal sanctions against gays and claim that gays are a terrorist threat to America.
This year the FRC opposed the U.S. House resolution condemning Ugandas law establishing the death penalty for homosexuality, claiming the resolution was a pro-homosexual promotion. Trying to cover the negative exposure it received when the information became public, the FRC claimed it opposed the resolution because it was too much pro-gay. The FRC specifically opposed language that gays have basic internationally recognized human rights such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A resolution to oppose the death penalty was too pro-gay?
One cannot defend an anti-gay opinion from a Christian position. Many Christians and many denominations support gay marriage. Opposing gays are only those Christians who interpret scripture in an inconsistent, literal way inconsistent because they do not support other literal statements such as slavery and Deuteronomy 22:29, which teaches that a raped virgin must marry her rapist.
