It is extremely hard. I have tried for years to get even close to being a beginner. I have a Chinese neighbor who slaughters me every time.

I started playing in 1971. I’ve played low-ranking pro’s with an 8 stone handicap and I *still* get slaughtered. I get better when I play several times a week for a couple of months against quality opponents, but it becomes opaque again when I stop for awhile. Curiously, extremely accomplished professionals play very quickly, placing stone more by intuition than analysis, it seems.
