A 'War on Christmas'? Jews who leave the house in December would beg to differ

The link below was sent to me by someone who shares the writer's views and sentiments.

As for myself, I was raised Christian, but gradually lost my (blind) faith just as I had with Santa Clause and the tooth fairy (only much later heh).

Perhaps not all of you will be sympathetic towards the Jewish author's perspective.

But maybe it will help us understand better how they feel about the pervasive inescapable Xmas Slog of December. As someone who grew up loving this holiday hugely, I found it helpful

Ho Ho ho !!

By Lux Alptraum

I have never been a fan of Christmas.

As a young Jewish child, I wrote a letter to my local newspaper arguing that Christmas trees in public schools were a violation of the separation of church and state. In the fifth grade, when Santa hats were all the rage among my classmates, I showed up to school wearing a yarmulke in an act of protest. In my adult years, I’ve joking referred to myself as a “one woman War on Christmas”; yes, I am the coworker who will loudly complain about your decision to blare “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” at your desk.

I should note that it is not the celebration of Christmas, per se, with which I take issue. Spending time with loved ones and exchanging gifts are lovely traditions, and while many of the particular traditions of Christmas are not quite to my taste, I’m thrilled to know they give others a great deal of joy. And, as someone who comes from a mixed-faith heritage, I have many relatives for whom Christmas is deeply meaningful and important. (Up until my grandmother died, most of my December 25s were spent at her house, opening presents around her tree — a tradition I remember quite fondly.)

What I do object to, however, is the culture that’s been built around Christmas, that has elevated one religious faith's year-end festivity into an inescapable, weeks-long period of compulsory celebration for nearly everyone. If you’re Muslim, Jewish, Hindu or otherwise uninterested in participating in a Christian holiday, you can personally opt out of Christmas Day by declining to get a tree and spending December 25 at the movies — but all bets are off should you choose to leave your house (or even turn on the TV) at any moment between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The pervasive Christmas music everywhere is what I find most annoying.

full disclosure: I was raised Christian and still celebrate the holiday as a gift-giving exchange. But I can deeply empathize with those of different faiths who have to endure the constant bombardment of the music and commercialism that accompanies the religious holiday.

Cars, high-end jewelry, the $10,000 iPhone.

Who are these people that are buying these things as Christmas gifts?

Nobody I know can afford such extravagance.

If I get a book or DVD that I've wanted, I'm happy as a clam!

And the people who can afford these fancy cars live in unbelievably extravagant homes as you can tell from the commercials, so obviously they can.

My favorite commercial is Honda who's just flat out said "Hey! Remember the joy you got when you spent $30,000 on a car last year? Why not recreate that and do it again?" Sure! Turn a $30,000 loan into a $60,000 loan! Why not? YOLO!

I'll admit I'm not the average US consumer, I just turned 50, and I've owned a total of 4 cars in my life.

Bought my first one (used $2000) at 19. Datsun 210.

When a red-light runner killed it and almost me, I got a Suzuki Sidekick (used again).

When that one's engine blew up I got a Subaru Forester. (used again)

Ran that girl into the ground, I loved it so...almost got 300,000 miles....but my husband insisted that I get a reliable car.

Bought my first new car, Mazda 3 two years ago. I'm hoping to drive it until I die, or gasoline is no longer sold.

And now I'm getting constant bombardment as well.

NO I DON'T WANT TO TRADE IN MY CAR!

I told my husband I'm never buying from a dealer ever again.
I did my first three on the private market and was satisfied every time.
No follow-up harassment!

Christmas, of course, has pagan roots and is celebrated in one fashion or another by non-Christians. Even atheists like me, my wife and my in-laws (we'll all share a big meal and exchange gifts).

However, she's also complaining about Christmas culture, and how "every store gets decked out in Christmas finery and puts carols on full blast," and how TV shows "get into the spirit." What does she want them to do? Stop?

Perhaps a better argument to take on would be the federal holiday Christmas itself. One can certainly argue it's unconstitutional (not saying I agree, but one can argue it).

I also think we should be more aware. We definitely should include Hanukkah decorations along with the Christmas ones.

However, if this author got her wish, there would be no more Christmas music and decorations in stores in December, and no mention of it on television. No thanks. I was at Bloomingdale's the other day, and it's "all decked-out," There's nothing like Christmas in NYC. Perhaps someone should do a poll. "Should stores keep or discard Christmas decorations?" I suspect "Keep" wins with 75% of the vote.

Maybe it's just me. It's my favorite holiday, as seen in my avatar.

I also don't know that all holiday decorations should be done away with.

But I think there could be more done to make them more inclusive and less irritating.

1) Keep the music quieter and instrumental only
2) Limit the season to DECEMBER ONLY
3) More decorations for Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, and other non-Christian holidays that are in December.

1) I'm a huge fan of instrumental. That's a fantastic idea.
2) Agree, but since they are private businesses, we can't force them, they will have to do it voluntarily.
3) Bloomingdale's had quite a few Hanukkah decorations, as did the restaurant that I went into the other night. Not really seeing any Kwanzaa or Solstice decorations, but I may have missed them. Bloomingdale's is 8 floors I believe.

You are absolutely right that it helps to live in a diverse city. I'd imagine that less diverse areas probably only put up Christmas decorations and nothing else.

I guess that's my biggest fault here. I take NYC for granted sometimes.

I don't understand why anyone other than a Jewish individual, family, business or shul would want to display Chanukah decorations.

It may seem "respectful" but, frankly, it's condescending. Have your holiday. We'll live through it, thanks.

She almost certainly gets a paid holiday out of the deal. I get the complaints about Christmas being in her face from November to Dec 25, but I doubt she has a big problem with the day off. Which is fine. At least those in her situation reap some kind of benefit for what they have to put up with.

I also don’t get her beef with Santa and Frosty the Snowman, as these are secular elements to Christmas. A nativity scene on the other hand is not.

We have a celebration in December we call Chrismahanukwanzadan for our close friends. It incorporates foods and traditions of everyone and is light-hearted. Last year we went around to look at lights and would call “Happy Holidays” to people we encountered. The number of people who replied “No, Merry Christmas” or “We only say Merry Christmas” in really nasty voices made us shake our heads.

and it's very much about kids also. similar to Easter. the religious will go to church also. but others will have fun with the egg hunts, baskets, candy, bunny etc.
