YES!!!! Rick Scott Strikes Out Again: Federal Court Blocks Florida Attack On Early Voting

Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) has been relentless in his push to restrict the right to vote. He’s advanced an illegal voter purge that would have disproportionately impacted the minority citizens in his state. And a federal court blocked his effort to suppress voter registration last May. On Thursday, a federal court in Washington, DC concluded that another part of Scott’s anti-voting agenda cannot take effect because the state’s new restrictions on early voting negatively impact minority communities.

Last year, the Republican-controlled legislature cut Florida’s number of early voting days down from 8 to 12. However, because minority communities tend to utilize early voting days, the federal court ruled that fewer options for early voting “would make it materially more difficult for some minority voters to cast a ballot.” The court rejected the state’s early voting changes based on their discriminatory impact:

We conclude that we cannot preclear Florida’s early voting changes at this time because the State has failed to satisfy its burden of proving that those changes will not have a retrogressive effect on minority voters if the covered counties offer only the minimum number of early voting hours required under the new statute, which would constitute only half the hours required under the prior law.

These Federal rulings can effect other State/Federal rulings.

But I'm sure weasel Scott and his cronies have quite a few other devious plans in the works that
will enable their side to throw the election as much as they dare think they can get away with.

To amplify what RockaFowler said upthread, the ruling only blocks the change in 5 counties: Monroe, Collier, Hendry, Hardee and Hillsborough. The change is not blocked and will apply in the rest of the state, including the urban populations in S. Florida counties Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.

The ruling is obviously a good thing but Scott's attack on voting will still be highly successful unless it can be overturned in the other 62 counties of Florida.

I am from there, aka Tampa. It will make the difference in Tampa, where the locals are trying to outright take the county, but the fact this chance was not struck down in Pinellas is a big problem. Tampa/St pete are twin cities down here ala fort worth/dallas, Minneaoplis/st paul, etc. St Pete, aka pinellas, is where a lot of Black Voters are, and where the police has a VERY big problem with violence against blacks.

but its by absentee ballots, not at the polls. Pukes haven't targeted absentee ballots, because the majority are R.

I'm shaking some cobwebs loose here, but I seem to remember that back in 2000, she allowed 3000 absentee ballots to be counted even though they came in with-out signatures. They were signed (illegally) by election officials and should have been thrown out, but she let them be counted because she ruled that the election officials didn't mean to break the law. Or something equally lame. Between her and Ken Blackwell in Ohio in 2004, do you think we've learned to NOT let the person who's running the campaign for one of the candidates be responsible for counting the votes?

There is a history of that here. They mostly take advantage of the elderly, going to facilities and "helping" the elderly vote.

There are some laws; I'm not sure if they are foolproof but two people have been arrested for violating them recently in S. Florida. Some years ago there was a mayor who appeared to have been elected and then that result was overturned by a judge due to shenanigans of absentee ballot brokers.

Voter ID, of course, won't do anything to eliminate this problem because voting this way does not require an ID.

And I recall problems in Orlando several years back. Interesting that absentee ballot fraud is of a magnitude hundreds, if not a thousand, times greater than voter fraud at the polls... yet no ID required.

to cross-over and vote Dem because of this. I find once they are properly informed of what the GOP are doing they won't like it as well as the independents. Many who realize what the GOP are doing simply don't like it and will either stay home or vote Dem.

What the Goppers are doing is taking away our freedom and a right to vote. There are many goppers who are fair minded.

This shit will backfire on the GOP 24/7.
