New Cohen Bombshells Might End the Trump Presidency
Michael Cohen tossed another bomb at Donald Trump late Friday night by publicly disclosing that he told his former boss, who was then a presidential candidate, about a phone call he made to Moscow in 2016. Cohen said he called the Kremlin to request help from the Russian government in building a Trump Tower in Russias capital city.
Not only that, but Cohen also maintains that he got guidance from Trumps lawyers and his White House staff in 2017 while he drafted his false statement to Congress seeking to cover up the truth about the Moscow project and the fact that Donald Trump was heavily involved in the project.
Both of these new, explosive accusations were made by Cohens attorneys late Friday night as part of the case being prosecuted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. They were part of a sentencing memo in which Cohen asked for a no-jail sentence in exchange for his cooperation with Muellers investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Cohens new filings with the court completely contradict the statements of President Trump who said he had little knowledge and no involvement in the Moscow project.

The new accusations concerning President Trump were made by Cohens lawyers in a sentencing memorandum that was delivered to a federal judge in Manhattan on Friday night.
Donald Trump has been downplaying his knowledge of the Moscow Trump Tower project, but Michael Cohen has now filed a court document saying he knew everything and was intimately involved in the project every step of the way. And Cohen said that his lies to Congress were in effect drafted with the knowledge and assistance of Donald Trump and his lawyers.
Trump keeps trying to run away from this scandal, but the faster he tries to run, the more it catches up with him.
It is only a matter of time now until the scandal completely envelops him. The presidency of Donald Trump will soon be over.

(9,667 posts)By all means, acknowledge notable leaders, as appropriate, for their works and humanness, just as we would mark less visible folks for their own humanity. But that length of mourning and acknowledgement seems pre-determined by what media interests (our cultural callers) can accommodate, and fashioned by exactly whom?

(4,007 posts)I wonder if Don McGahn (sp?) and others who already left the WH legal team spilled the beans to Mueller in exchange for immunity? I mean, they were fools to help draft Cohen's testimony to Congress in the first place. But, given that they did, were they expected that attorney/client privilege would save their asses?
No lawyer here but intentionally conspiring to help a client lie must be grounds for some prosecution REGARDLESS of that privilege, right?

(32,645 posts)McGahn wasn't on the Trump campaign so he can only testify to the coverup, not what happened before the election. You may be right about the immunity part, or maybe McGahn isn't getting charged. We haven't heard yet.

(6,254 posts)client privilege may not exist. Executive privilege may apply. Good point. White House counsel serves the Presidents office in his official capacity. So like when Bush wanted to authorize torture he first went to White House counsel to find legal justification for torture. John Yoo an attorney in that office tortured the law to come up with legal justifications for the use of torture so that the President Bush could stand behind the legal opinion of b White House Counsel to cloak him in immunity. But I dont know if that creates attorney-client privilege. Bush prevented most of his people from testifying invoking executive privilege to frustrate most efforts at congressional oversight. Quite frankly, from a legal perspective I think Trumps lawyers screwed up allowing anybody in the White House to give Mueller testimony. It was a strategic mistake that will bite Trump in the ass.

Like my old gym teacher told me in high school, "you fuck with the bull you get the horns." Mueller is a bull.

How much does anyone want to bet that Mueller has already asked Trump about this and he perjured himself?
That alone will earn the orange man a felony rap he's not going to be able to twitter out of.

(19,204 posts)those words followed every one of Donald Trump's answers to Mueller's questions. He's so busy (from those 4 hour work days) doing the "business of the people" that some things just kinda' slip his mind. You can bet each of Trump's answers was carefully worded to leave the slimeball an "out" should he be questioned further.

(36,827 posts)Cohen didn't just lie to congress on his own. This was a carefully crafted lie by a web of conspirators at the highest level. Each time one of those conspirators turns on the orange man, it's going to be incrementally harder for him to claim ignorance. Not only that, the political fallout will destroy his presiduncy. It's going to get increasingly difficult for the GOP to continue to defend someone who lied not only to the public, but during a criminal investigation. One by one his defenders in congress are going to turn on him an all of this is going to play out in real time in the House.

(19,204 posts)"I have the worlds greatest memory. Its one thing everyone agrees on." Trump certainly is big on superlatives when it comes to talking about himself. The idiot doesn't stop to think that all of those superlatives are the easiest thing to verify, and he's batting .000 when it comes to his braggadocio.
I'd forgotten this, but Ben Carson was his closest competitor at that time. When they could keep him awake, that is. And this was in November 2015, before the Russians started pushing their boy to the top. That we know of, anyway.

Otherwise, this POtuS will continue to wield the vast powers of the presidency.
The only check on that power is the Democratic House, which will be in place in any event.

(5,270 posts)but seems possible that Cohen with all his tapes and cellphone and email evidence is poised to be the equivalent to John Dean in breaking the conspiracy wide open. His lawyer Lanny Davis had tamped down expectations several months ago, so I was not expecting much more from Cohen, but that seems to have been a fakeout so Cohen could quietly cooperate with Mueller without tipping off other witnesses or targets prematurely.
