They were political rivals in 1992 but became friends. It wasn't necessary. It wasn't boosting the popularity of either. And it didn't make sense.
But they somehow found a way not only to talk to each other post-election and post-WH, but they liked and respected each other.
I like the willingness of both of them to transcend politics and the past.

(6,377 posts)The Obamas are very close to George Bush. I think theres a mutual understanding and respect typically between presidents, that even if they didnt agree with policy decisions made, the only people who truly understand what happens in the Oval Office are those who have been there.

Trump will not be a active member of the group. He doesn't play well with others.
(They also don't much care for Jimmy Carter.)

Hillary consulting Kissinger, a man guilty of crimes against humanity whose evaluations of subjects of the moment and the past are still sought out by people of conscience who must make big decisions.

(89,252 posts)as former presidents they could have influence working together. but they also ended up developing a good friendship through it .

(205,540 posts)And Ford took him up on it, was very helpful when it came to dealing with Congress and later worked with the Carter Center. They became lifelong friends and Ford asked Carter to deliver his eulogy. Former opponents can become friends, HW Bush and Clinton, Carter and Ford. It is a very exclusive club and it has served then well to reach out.

(205,540 posts)Though he sure was placed in a tough position. I learned from President Carter's autobiography ("A Full Life: Reflections at 90" how close the two became - and their families - and how Ford helped the new president navigate Congress and eventually got on board with The Carter Center. And how the former opponents became lifelong friends.

(54,410 posts)I just didn't ever see him as becoming president. The kindly corner druggist, maybe. I like Clinton, too, but never met him before he became president, and so can't make the same comment.
HW was wise not to invade Iraq after liberating Kuwait.
On the other hand, he gave us Dan Quayle as VP and Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court, so his judgment was far from impeccable. Plus he hated broccoli, which by itself should have disqualified him for re-election.

(54,410 posts)I had quite a long chat with him when I was 16 (1968). It was an alumni interview. He was still a Congressman from Houston, and I was applying to enter his school as a one-year senior. He seemed nice enough a guy (we did not discuss broccoli), but if you had told me then that he would head the CIA within 10 years and become president within 20, I would have called you crazy.

Trump has certainly affected our tolerance for things in the past.
I can sincerely say that GHW Bush openly showed his love, respect and admiration for his wife. Trump is incapable of any of that.

(343 posts)My mother actually met GHW Bush when he was at a campaign stop and told him to his face that she would not vote for him. I was never a fan either. But Trump changes everything. All former Presidents, even Nixon, look better. Trump is such a piece of human sewage that the guy down at the corner bar would be a better President. So you have to hand it to GHW Bush. He is looking better all the time.

That's just a pitiful commentary on the present reality.

(1,414 posts)of '68 and how he defended his vote to his constituents. As the account is told, upon explaining his vote to his constituents, who themselves were vehemently opposed, he changed many hearts and minds on the subject of fair housing and the rights of ALL Americans. Yes, HW had a political record of both highs and lows, but what could be said about him is that in many cases he put country above party and politics. Rest In Peace HW.
