Dear America: You are waking up, as Germany once did, to the awareness that 1/3 of your people would kill another 1/3, while 1/3 watches.

(5,275 posts)It would be bad enough if it was just us but it isnt. Again it is lack of collective memory of the rise of Fascism in the 30s. This predicament is on steroids these days because of social media.
Thankfully sanity and oversight will return in the House, and that even Judges this idiot appointed slap him down sometimes.
But I remain stunned and horrified that otherwise decent sane people voted for this excuse for a human being.

(9,090 posts)it's about 15% but the idiot liberals ignore talk radio so 300 corporate coordinated liars on 1500 radio stations get to pretend they're worth another 15% or more

(14,564 posts)Been saying what they OP quoted since Bush IIs first term.
OVER 1/3 of the country has been effectively mind shrunk by the media you note for over a quarter century that their brains shut off over the "liberal."
That includes some of the "middle" 1/3, frankly.
We have a deranged lunatic psychopath as POTUS, and his party still won roughly 46% of the House races.
Factor in Gerrymandering and whatever all other fuckwittery the Rs do, still easily 1/3 of the country.

(9,090 posts)much of the rest would slither away if, for instance, mueller's investigation found limbaugh and hannity have been getting russian money for a decade or more.
i suspect 20% are constantly quoting and referring to limbaugh etc to people in their sphere who are too busy or apathetic to find out different - that's a lot less influential when the talk radio gods are discredited.
they put these liars on every corner and stump in the country 30 years ago and liberals just walk by, making it much more effective - merely just seeing other americans calling them liars would help

Probably will be closer to 40% than not.
Nixon was a 22% when he resigned, and this county is exponentially more stupid now.

This kind of hyperbole is not terribly helpful. All it does is make most folks think the speaker is a fool and helps to stereotype those raising legitimate concerns as hysterical, thus diminishing the message.

(58,785 posts)a whole lot of the elections they "won." Germany didn't vote to replace its democracy with a fascist state, it was taken by by fiat through progressive election thefts, abuse of power and law breaking by those in office, and brute force.
Something to keep in mind as we watch today's hard right become more and more blatant, and desperate, in election thievery.
After being sworn in, our 116th Democratic house caucus will present H.S. 1: a giant omnibus democracy reform package, which will address everything we need to completely reform our elections and much, much more. However, most bills will not be passed until we control the senate also. Before then, look to the states with substantial Democratic control for big reforms that must wait at the federal level.
I am, hopeful, however, that in 2020 Brian Kemp will at least not be able to de-register anyone because congress passed our bill mandating automatic nationwide voter registration. It has widespread electoral support, and the Republicans must deal if they are to get anything they want.

(15,041 posts)Germany was a highly advanced country that was a leader in scientific research. Yet, some Germans, just enough, fell victim to a demagogue who blame "The Other."
America has been called the most powerful and advanced country in the world. And our president is (politically) referred to as the most powerful man in the world.
Yet here we are. A totally ignorant buffoon is occupying the White House and about 1/3 of the population treats him like "the second coming."
It seems that such is the way of human nature. We always believed that "It can't happen here."
It's happening. And it has the potential to destroy us all, and possibly, every human being on this planet. (Yeah, that nuclear stuff.)
What we can do is limited. But by winning the House, it became a lot less limited.
But make no mistake about it. As long as this madman is president, we are all in danger. So do everything you possibly can to oppose him. No matter how small, no matter how inconsequential, no matter how seemingly useless, the poison he spews must be fought.
It's only halftime. And perhaps we can put a stop to the horror that is Donald Trump and the Republican senate. Keep fighting. Don't lose hope. We can't allow "it" to happen here.
