I wont be surprised when it happens.

(15,682 posts)There's not a chance in hell he would ever think of that on his own.

(115,836 posts)A chief justice has to be confirmed by the Senate as chief justice, so K would have to go through another confirmation hearing and he might not be so lucky the second time. And what would Tiny do with Roberts? He can't fire him.

(3,256 posts)If anything he's one of the worst of the R's. I guess some dems will fall for it. I think it's pathetic that he expects to get some credibilty after he's done the dirtiest of the dirty work. Without his Shelby versus Holder and Citizens United The R's might not haave the Senate. Also, if you go back to the stolen elections of 2000, 2004 and 2016 he wouldn't be on the damn court. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

(92,394 posts)He is what he is.
He is a conservative justice, and he never has hidden that. He also ruled on the Obergefell V. Hodges decision, which stated same-sex marriage was a constitutional right.
I will tell you who are frauds though. Those self-identified progressives who refused to vote for the Democratic nominee by either voting third party or not voting. The Jill Steins and Susan Sarandon's who conned the naïve and gullible that there was no difference between republicans and Democrats

(488 posts)And the rebukes may change how Roberts will lean. If he shifts to the left as a permanent swing vote, we win.

I think Roberts falls more into the Kennedy category
I don't seem him shifting left, but can see him becoming a swing vote on some issues.
While I don't think Trump's insults will change his philosophy, it is not unheard of where being on the highest court has changed a justice.
Hugo Black's background by any standard was a racist before he became a SC justice, and the court changed him. He voted for Brown verses Board of education which said segregated public schools were unconstitutional, so maybe your assessment/wish regarding Roberts might happen

(31,261 posts)How does the Chief Justice hold that job. I know that a President appoints one if the position comes open. But what happens when there is a healthy sitting Chief Justice who is not planning on quitting and a President wants someone else in the job?

(42,759 posts)Whether the position is filled by someone not currently not he court (as was the case with Roberts) or by a sitting justice being nominated to be Chief Justice, it requires a separate confirmation. In short, Trump can whine all he wants. Roberts is CJ for as long as he chooses to be CJ.
