McDonald's Manager Kicks Black Teens Out After Racist Allegedly Threatens Them With a Gun
"I don't give a f**k, get out of my store now," the manager told the teens.
What started out as an ordinary trip to a Minnesota McDonald's ended up with a racist pulling a gun on a group of Somali-American teens and a manager yelling for the the group to get out, despite their lives being at risk.
In videos taken by one of the teenagers and posted to Twitter, a group of Somali-American teenagers can be seen confronting the man, who is leaving the store after yelling a racial slur at one of the kids. The man brandished his pistol threatening the teenagers. The group, immediately, turns to run away from the man and one of the teenager yells, "he has a gun." The gun cannot be seen in the video.

It took an older white gentleman who was a customer at the restaurant to explain to the "manager" that putting the the group out would be putting directly in harm's way. He then instructed her to call the police which is what should have been done on the first place.
"Don't send them off there when a dude just pulled a f**king gun on them," he says. "You've got to call the f**king cops is what you've got to do."

Sending kids into danger and telling them there is a reason the gun was pulled makes you one sorry excuse for a human being.

Granted, if they own part of that liability if they haven't given emergency situation training.
Despite the racial overtone (or not) - this was a horrible safety risk/legal liability.

It would probably be a good idea if she stayed away from jobs in which she's required to deal with a demanding -- and often gun-totin'-- public. I guarantee if those had been white Minnesotan teens she would have behaved differently... you know it, too.

Let me share for a second...

I was a book geek and didn't understand what was going... just give me my books and I'll be ok...
I was tortured for the crime of being WHITE.... so NO.... RACISM works BOTH WAYS!!!!

How do you know? Wouldn't your answer require the situation with white kids actually take place, or at least some power of prognostication/ESP Etc on your part? Or are you assuming? Just asking.

BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, Pool Patrol Paula, the racist Starbucks manager throwing out the waiting black guys, and all the unarmed black guys killed by copsand on and on and on?
None of those incidents happened to white people, just black people.
I'll attribute your post to naivete instead of "someone playing dumb."
Deal?
quickesst
(6,280 posts).... that you are incapable of differentiating between the people you mention who are textbook examples of outright racists and the completely different situation this girl was confronted with. Now I'm not asking. I am telling you that you are making an accusation based solely on assumption and arriving at that conclusion with what you perceive as evidence when only two facts connect the situation being discussed and the examples you present as "proof" she would have acted differently had the young men been white. #1. There was a minority involved. #2. There was a white person involved. Other than that, there are zero similarities between this situation and those you offer up as proof. No deal.

(53,784 posts)in this country despite the many, many blatant examples of it we witness over and over again.
This one was "being a teen in a fast food joint while black" and you don't want to admit it for some reason.
The manager was throwing the teens out in to the parking lot where the gunman who threatened them was.
Duh!
quickesst
(6,280 posts).... are good examples of inherent racism. I simply believe this girl's reaction was out of panic and fear with no racist intent and she would have reacted the same way no matter who was present. At least my opinion is based upon real world evidence in the video and not an assumption made based upon completely different situations that have very little in common. That you have made an accusation based upon nothing but assumption is a fact. Nothing will change that.

I think she panicked because she was confronted with a room full of scared black kids, which scared her.
This and the other examples I gave are all of a piecethe below the surface and barely concealed, inherent racism in the country.
I'm African American so it's no surprise to me.
I will concede that she shouldn't have thrown them out, but I am not convinced that she would not have thrown out a bunch of white kids if the roles were reversed. I think she would have thrown anyone out of her place just to get the situation removed from her location. Ask me about any of your previous examples of inherent racism and you will get a completely different answer from me. I'll leave it at that.

(488 posts)As an owner and operator, I would be extremely concerned about the downtread of the store and take action before it goes too unprofitable for Mickey D to revoke that franchise. Therefore, I would fire the fuck out of the manager, close the store for a day for race relation training then move on.
Also deny UI.
But I don't own Mickey D franchise.

(12,381 posts)There is no way, the managers were trained for this type of situation,
heck we had some managers that were still at High School.
Way way out of depth, and she shouldnt be expected to handle a situation
where someone pulls a gun.
In this case, I dont think its racist.

(6,831 posts)operators and managers do not have some degree of training in situations such as this. It has been the norm for decades, but now is more important than ever given that we have a WH that encourages people to believe that violence with a gun is the go-to manner in which to handle any situation that doesn't go their way.

Is she a racist?
I don't know because there is not enough information in the video that would allow me to call her a racist. I do not know if her actions were driven by race. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't.
If I was inclined to view every confrontation between people of different races as a racist act, I could definitely argue that she is a racist. I'm not inclined to do that though. I think it may have been more of a panic situation. But again, I really have no idea. Not enough info.

(1,148 posts)Racist and religiously bigoted behavior is a PROBLEM in these public accommodations. Just as Starbucks had to learn, they need to prepare their managers to deal with incidents like this. It is interfering with people's right to patronize an establishment. So yeah, the businesses ARE responsible for protecting their patrons from harassment and threats. No, they aren't equipped to handle someone with a gun, but fair treatment of customers ought to be a priority. It's good for business anyway. And why can't these places make a statement that ALL are welcome in their establishment and that harassment will not be tolerated? Why would it hurt to have a little sticker at the entrance indicating so - they already have a bazillion stickers / notices and signs at the entrance?
Society in general has a responsibility to protect and defend people's right to, uh, just be in public. We should all do more, but corporations should set a standard.
