Report: Student wore Ku Klux Klan outfit to Poplar Bluff High School for 'study group'

A Poplar Bluff High School student dressed up as a member of the Ku Klux Klan as part of classroom studies on Friday, according to news reports and social media posts.

Despite the overtly racist costume, the district statement said that officials did not believe at this time that the student was intending to act in a discriminatory way.

“We, as a school district, are fully cognizant of the negative historical implication, and strong emotional response that this mode of dress may create,” the statement said, according to the TV station report.

The school said it was investigating the incident and would take steps to make sure it is "providing age-appropriate, historical context on these critical issues in a socially relevant and culturally responsible manner."

Anthony said, "I’ve never ever heard of a history teacher who said it was OK to use a KKK costume for a project. Because when people walk into that classroom and see that uniform, that’s automatically a red flag."

…………………………….

I heard the teacher has now been suspended after the incident and video went viral on snapchat and FB

“I want to sincerely apologize for the pain and negative attention that I have brought to our classroom, school, and community,” the letter began. “I made a mistake on Friday during our skit assignment,” the teacher continued:

I let a student wear an inappropriate costume that was unacceptable and hurt many people’s feelings. As the professional in the room, I should have known better. I am sorry.

It is my job to ensure my students feel safe in class and at school. Because of my lapse in judgment, many of you were hurt and felt uncomfortable. I never wanted that to happen...

I am so sorry for making this mistake, and I hope that you can all forgive me and we can work through this together. I understand that healing and forgiveness take time, and I am absolutely okay with that.

My mother in law was 91 when she passed, after living with us for many years.

Best wishes for Thanksgiving, and remember your own health.

Screenshot from the video posted...that was either an original 'costume' are handmade for him.

From the second link:

There’s always that one person in the group project who does all the work. I bet the students in the group who were supposed to dress as a lynch mob didn’t show up. But students in the class took photos of the KKKid and uploaded them to social media, completely ignoring the group member in the sheriff’s uniform who was dressed as Bull Connor.https://www.theroot.com/school-says-student-who-wore-kkk-uniform-to-class-was-n-1830588290

Dear Lord, I had to look up the name Bull Connor...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Connor

The Freedom Riders arrived in Birmingham on May 14, 1961. After their stop in Anniston, Alabama, the Greyhound bus was attacked and they were offered no police protection. After they left the town, they were forced to stop by a violent mob that firebombed and burned the bus, but no activists were fatally hurt. A new Greyhound bus was put into service and departed for Birmingham. The activists on the earlier Trailways bus had been accosted by KKK members who got on the bus in Atlanta and beat up the activists, pushing them all to the back of the bus.

As the Trailways bus reached the terminal in Birmingham, a large mob of white Klansmen and news reporters was waiting for them. The Riders were viciously attacked soon after they got off the bus and attempted to get service at the all-white lunch counter. Some were taken to the loading dock area, away from reporters, but some reporters were also beaten with metal bars, pipes, and bats and one's camera was destroyed. After fifteen minutes, the police finally arrived, but by then most Klansmen had left.[16][17]

Connor had purposely let the Klansmen beat the Riders for fifteen minutes with no police interference. He publicly blamed the violence on many factors, saying that "No policemen were in sight as the buses arrived, because they were visiting their mothers on Mother's Day".[18] He insisted that the violence came from out-of-town meddlers and that police had rushed to the scene "as quickly as possible."[19] The violence was covered by national media.

The teacher did not err once, this one makes two. I am disgusted.
