General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThere are two Saudi Arabias
One of pleasure and power, one where people have licenses to kill, one of political games.
And another one where talking to an unrelated person of another gender, where participation in politics, and 'witchcraft' can all get you thrown in jail indefinitely.
Knowing this, it makes sense why the right wing Evangelicals are becoming increasingly interested in Saudi politics and culture.

(35,077 posts)We create a dichotomy where the other, the middle eastern Muslim, either upholds our civilization or they are out to destroy it.
Saudi Arabia is clearly playing both sides of that.

(20,491 posts)"He experienced everything with an open mind and an open heart and relayed it very beautifully in the episode," Danya Alhamrani wrote for Elle on Friday, discussing her time hosting Bourdain. "I remember him telling me not to read the comments when the show aired; he felt people are cruel in general when commenting from behind the safety of a computer screen. But when the episode went live, the response was overwhelming positive."
Alhamrani goes on to point out that the episode is still, 10 years later, one of the few widely seen positive representations of the kingdom.
"To this day, 10 years later, Im still told by people I meet that the only good thing they see online about Saudi Arabia is the episode of No Reservations," she wrote.
I wonder who I should believe?

(41,982 posts)She said, amount other things, that there is a preference for white, blond nurses-as a sign of status. That members of the royal family (its a big family) will show up with a relatively benign headache and expect royal, and extensive treatment. I forget what all she said, but she thought that a number of members of the Royal family had mental health issues.
She said very rich kids crashed expensive Hummers out in the desert for fun.
There were the usual restrictions and severe punishment for drinking alcohol, and she had to stay around places that were safe for her. She said she wouldnt do it again.
Edit to add, Saudi sex/slave traffickers are very busy and seem to face zero consequences
