So tomorrow is the day we will help our 15 y/o black Lab, Roofus, find his way to the Rainbow Bridge. Born with congenitally subluxated patellas on his back legs (that we didn't discover until he started to gain his adult weight), he has bunny hopped, sad sidesaddle, and romped through our lives, always giving us a loud 'AROO' and a big Roofus grin. Yes, his kneecaps are on the sides of his legs -- not on the front as they should be. Not a surgical candidate, and not one to let grass grow under his feet, he (along with Bobo the Wonder Dog -- our dachshund) escaped the yard not once, but TWICE. They crossed 4 and 6-lane streets to swim in a nearby apartment pond, or in the pond near a local high school. A repaired gate and a sturdy padlock solved that problem. As he aged, Roofus' ability to run and walk worsened, and we often helped him out to the backyard. Still, he would lie on his ultra-thick bed, watch football with us in the den, and enjoy the warmth of the fire. He has started having seizures, and we now know it is time. So, light a candle for Roofus to help him find his way and join Zack, Bobo, and all the kitties who groomed him and slept with him. Preston will show you around Rooferoni.

(512 posts)I will light a candle and say a prayer for him and your family. You will be with him again one day and he will be healthy, playful, and frolicking. I know it is hard to let him go on. It is the last act of kindness that you can give him. I am glad that he had the loving family that he did.
Wishing Roofus a safe journey, his buddies are all there to welcome him...

(9,426 posts)they really do "leave paw prints on our hearts" I have had several dogs, all loveable personalities. Plus a few cats who were truly amazing. So sorry for what you are going through. It is never easy, no matter what time of year it is. You have given your pets a loving family, that is all you can do. They can leave, knowing that they were loved and important in your lives.

(21,636 posts)I myself lost my Shar Pei a couple of years ago, and my Basset a couple of years before that.
They were old (15 and 13, respectively), so it was not unexpected - but none the easier because of it.
The aroos, arfs, grunts, and howls always sound as clear as a bell in your mind, and the paw prints always stay in your heart.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and All the Best.

I just went through this with my lab in early Sept. and it was and still is not easy but
I wish you well. Just remember the more you hurt will show you the more you loved
each other.

So it's good for Roofus.

Rest well.

(34,111 posts)I had a friend do that this afternoon, she is beside herself. I have a friend who thought she was going to have to do that with her kitty yesterday and another one several days ago but they are both OK. I am up most nights right now with one of my kitties who is very ill, may be a bit better tonight (fingers crossed). I don't know if it is the seasonal change, I have never noticed it before but maybe it is just hard on the older critters like it is us as we age.
May Roofus have an easy passage and find his way to the bridge to wait for you. I am so sorry, it hurts so much! Be well.

(988 posts)Sorry for your pain. I know it's tuff. I lost a chocolate lab the same day McCain passed. I also have a black lab named Rufus and he is also a spectacular dog. He is also weak having been through the last year with cancer and becoming a tripod. I know what you are feeling. Remember the fun times
Well said.

Its so hard to let them go but you know when it is time. The only things dogs want is to be loved and taken care of. It sounds like your Roofus was a lucky dog. Hang in there

Today is 4 years to the day that we lost our beloved Schmoo...it never gets easier when we lose our fur babies or when their lives have run their course. It certainly sounds like you have plenty of great memories of a life well-lived and shared, I do hope those flood you in the days and weeks to come.
For all the others too...
Shedding tears for you and Roofus and every other person in this thread that has lost fur babies. It is never easy. Grief is the price we pay for love. As much as it hurts--and oh boy does it hurt--I am a better person for having loved my puppies and kitties. They have made my life immensely better. RIP Roofus. sending love and hugs to you, rustysgurl.

It makes my heart happy to think of her, and Roofus, and all the other beloved members of our families that just happen to have fur, or feathers, or whatever, out there in those rainbows, having fun all over again.

(1,716 posts)He is almost 15. Probably a golden chow mix with the golden personality all the way. Rescued him at 18 months from the kill shelter. He has been our best boy for 13 years. Im going to miss him so much. Our daily walks , his snoring, him poking his food all over the floor. His stuffies everywhere.
Lap of love is coming to our home today. He is very ready. 😭🐕 We will think of you and Roofus. They can be buddies now.

(113,325 posts)Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

(13,776 posts)It's so unfair that dogs' and cats' lives are so much shorter than humans'--but he was lucky to have a long, long life for a dog, and he had such a wonderful time, having fun and giving and receiving so much love. He will always have a warm, snug, cozy place in your hearts. I hope those memories will help to heal your heartache from the inside.

But we both knew this day would come
The day we had to part.

Your trembling hand touch my head.
Today you did the bravest thing
Today you set me free
Thank you for a wonderful life
Thank you for loving me.

(1,040 posts)Y'all are the best. It has been an up and down day. My niece arrived at 8:30, McDonald's cheeseburgers in hand. She had to convince the manager to fire up the lunch grill for my Rooferoni (he did). So, his last breakfast was CHEESEBURGERS! Lots of pets and love followed. The vet arrived at 9am, and was very kind. He explained the process to us, gave us all the time we needed, and was very respectful. Our vet runs a mobile vet service -- he doesn't practice out of an office. Roofus being able to transition on his own bed, under his own blankie, with his favorite squeaky, and surrounded by all who loved him is worth more than gold. Given his mobility challenges, I cannot imagine the stress and anxiety he would suffer trying to get into a vehicle, driving, and then going into an strange, cold, antiseptic office.
It's hard to look down in the den and see the empty bed. I meant to tidy up and move some of his things, but it's just too soon. Thank you all again for your words of support and encouragement. Reading them caused the tears to flow, but they were healing tears, and that's ok.
