Fox News anchor Chris Wallace told President Trump that he is viewed as a "beacon for repression around the world" because of his repeated attacks against the press.
Wallace made the statement to Trump while conducting a sit-down interview with the president that was aired on Sunday. In it, Wallace pressed Trump about his rhetoric in regard to the media, noting that most presidents haven't like the coverage of their administrations.
"No president has liked his press coverage ... Nobody called it the enemy of the American people," Wallace said.
"The fake news is the enemy its fake, its phony," Trump replied, before claiming that he doesn't mind negative press coverage if he gets something wrong.
But Wallace pushed Trump on the topic, saying that "leaders in authoritarian countries like Russia, China, Venezuela, now repress the media using your words."

(4,723 posts)The crowds go wild when he says it, because it feeds the deplorables' idiotic notion that the media is a liberal mouthpiece. And, he not only loves the adulation the deplorables give him, he loves it when they vote for him and his repulsive Republican cronies.

(13,877 posts)His worst fear is irrelevancy. And it is true. The press magnifies His Fake News. He has lied thousands of times, and the press goes right along with it...seldom calling him out. And when they do, he throws it right back in their face.
This is a lose/lose proposition for the press and our country. Thousands of reports on his lies...not specifically or at the time, but moaning about it after the fact. It's reported without shock or offense...just like it's the way it is. He's winning as long as he sees his face on TV. That is all he wants, and he does not care about how it happens. He's playing the press...going further and further and more menacingly down the rabbit hole. They are playing along. How deep will they go
I don't know the answer, other than to just...do what he threatened, presumably to keep them in line...not show up. That, in itself, would be a magnificent press event. Stand outside the WH, report on leaks, find local politicians doing good things, report on the wins, not on his blabber.
It's a pipe dream, I know. These people get paid serious money for the "privilege" of getting into the WH Press Corps (totally leaving out the Jim Acosta situation and new threats) ...but that was when we had honorable, or at least not cretinous occupants, of our most important news source. It is just a garbage dump now...especially with SHS...lying, bobbing, weaving and grinning..."interns" who are really high level staff...everybody is playing the game.
Personally, I have to fight off the urge to just turn it all off. It's a joke. He made it a joke. He's laughing his ass off. Decorum...ha...for everyone else.

(13,571 posts)Reporters must show up every day in order to lay down a marker for history that the American people have the Constitutional right to question their president via the free watchdog press.
Trump would glory in a briefing room filled with his sycophants. Seriously. Think about it.
Our job is to protect reporters while they, every day, show up to ask questions on our behalf.
That is how we check his grab of power. That is how we hold him accountable. That is how we preserve our liberty.

(13,877 posts)the Big Dogs didn't come. I mean it's just a rhetorical conversation, but he doesn't get power in that room without the press power that attends. SHS gets the warm up job as Joker, and he gets the Emperor With No Clothes On gig.
The ones who ask the nice questions, seldom make any news at all. Boring...probably for him too. I'm not saying no press...just the opposite...just not in that "privileged setting" ... another institution he is making a farce out of.
That is only one small event in the life of The Press...and it's a Sh$$ Show. That or on the lawn, where he loves to wax idiotic...we don't need to see a lying president make fun of us...knowing he is lying and padding along after him. We need to hear the lies...that's what keeps the press relevant. And frankly, they are not doing their job. 6 lies a day? Where are they? What are they? It gets reported as fact...and he knows it. And he laughs at us. That is the Fake News. His News. They fear losing their jobs...right now...today.
What if someone asked him about the multiple hundreds of millions of dollars his family spends of our money cavorting all over the globe? Or his Foundation that laundered money for his campaign and that lawsuit? Now, that would be a perfect question for a reporter to ask...and on the part of the American taxpayer, to demand an answer for. We've been taken for fools...not just his Base Base, but, yes, The Press and the nation. They are now "allowed" to ask ... and hear ... only what he likes.
He's already declared war on the press...says he won't show up. Well..........I rest my case.
(Maybe he'll write the questions and hand them out, like he's writing Mueller's answers.)
