Police departments across the US have long been against the increased arming of civilians for this very reason.

When rushing into a highly dangerous situations where it is almost impossible to tell the good guys from the bad. Anybody waving a guy is in danger.

We need an @NRA explanation of how this happens and how to avoid it.
If they are so sure the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, they must have a well-reasoned guide as to how one good guy with a gun avoids being the victim of the next good guy's gun.

Police in America aren't taught properly to deescalate situations. Instead, they're taught to go in guns blazing.

It's also must be hard for them NOT to mentally, knowing that any civilian could be carrying military-quality weaponry.

This is a failure on many levels. Militarized Police and gun culture are among them. Unquestioning acceptance of the status quo and of comments such as "the police killed the wrong guy" are among our society's problems.

Add two more things to the list: the low standards that it takes to become a cop in America (especially compared to other countries), and police forces protecting their own even in the face of abuses or misuses of power

There may well be a racial element here - probably is. But from a cop's perspective, active shooter and like anyone, they are scared and on edge. The whole good guy with a gun idea is bullshit.
