House Democrats plan to probe every aspect of Trump's life and work, from family business dealings to the Space Force to his tax returns to possible "leverage" by Russia, top Democrats tell Axios.

Schiff, the top Democrat on the intelligence committee, told us he wants to help special counsel Robert Mueller, and plans to release with some redactions of classified material transcripts of dozens of interviews the committee conducted during its own Russia probe.
Schiff says these transcripts contain numerous possible contradictions with other testimony and facts that have come to light, meaning possible legal jeopardy for the witnesses, who have included White House officials and alumni.
"I want to make sure that Bob Mueller has the advantage of the evidence that we've been able to gather," Schiff said. "But equally important: that Bob Mueller is in a position to determine whether people knowingly committed perjury before our committee."
Schiff said: "We're going to want to look at what leverage the Russians may have over the president of the United States."

(18,837 posts)State charges won't have anything to do with Congress. Federal charges will. If justice is reliant on agreement between the House and Senate, I assume nothing will happen, regardless of the charges. The situation would have to look very bad (yes, even worse than it does now) for Senate Republicans in order for them to take any action.
Of course, one COULD make a case for what happened to them in the Midterms, and their fear of a Democrat in the Oval Office in 2020. But until their own personal interests are threatened, I don't see them acting on anything that is revealed, regardless of the magnitude.

(14,732 posts)legislation passed. Things that if they are stymied or killed by the GOP senate and fake 45 will push us far in 2020.

(14,178 posts)I've already heard reports that Democrats may want to just use the threat of subpoenas and investigation to bring them to the table. To compel them to work together with them and pass legislation.
While all very well and good if we get some compromise on some bill we never would have gotten, IMO the benifits of that approach just don't balance with the continued harm and threat of harm. The positive press we'd get for a news cycle on some incremental advancement would be fleeting. And that on one hand it will give Mitch and the GOP reason to crow for 2020 how they "worked together" to pass bills. In exchange Democrats will remain mum on Republican and Trump crimes as long as they get some better legislation and are allowed to contribute.
I think that while in past situations that may have been the prudent thing to do, this time that approach would be a net loss. Because it will not only soothe some worried moderates both in the Republican base and in the more conservative pundits on the MSM, some who are just chomping at the bit to get back to the horserace, both parties are equally bad/good narrative. But this will also at the same time distance those D voters that were aching for their leaders to get some justice, some payback, and instead we get 'looking forward 2.0'
Someone said in a post close to your's, that it would be good for Trump's chances if we went after him. Surmising I guess that his deplorable army would rally to save him. I say BS. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. I think they may get a bit louder, but I think everyone that has signed up for the Trump Cult is already in it, for the most part. And conversely, Democrats would gain voters by showing we are not pushovers this time. That we take Trump's crimes seriously. And that we will never negotiate with Trump-orists.

(10,721 posts)If Republicans play a role in ousting Trump, the Republican base will self-divide and self-conquer. At least that's my hope.

(3,768 posts)If enough Senators from a certain party are convicted of felonies and they have to be replaced by special election or appointed by a governor we might have a different story in the Senate.

(15,669 posts)They can only make "criminal referrals" to the DOJ, which can then investigate and decide whether to prosecute, unlikely with Whitaker.
That's why we need to revive the Independent (vs. Special) Prosecutor law. Not going to happen with the current political layout, but maybe in 2020?

Most important of course are the issues of corruption and compromise with foreign powers but there are a few dozen other transgressions worthy of investigation...from China patents to emoluments to puerto rico to obstruction to illegal use of designated moneys to hamstringing ACA to use of hackable phones to meetings with foreign powers without transcripts to Kennedy/Kavanaugh coordination to refusal to pursue election inteference...and more. most are much more important and real than benghazi or whitewater.
Anyone know of a comprehensive list of illegal or questionable transgressions kept somewhere?

(11,527 posts)He made a secret deal with Iran to hold our hostages until after the election and rewarded them with weapon sales, then channeled funds to the Contras. He wiggled out of any repercussions from that mess.
But, however bad Reagan was is dwarfed by Tiny. It's pretty safe to say that Tiny's been involved in criminal activity his entire adult life.
