While many political observers across the nation focused with keen-eyed attention to Tuesday nights gubernatorial election in Georgia, where Stacey Abrams sought to become the nations first black woman governor, an equally racially-contentious matter was on the ballot last night one that went largely unnoticed outside of an Atlanta suburb, where wealthy white people pushed an ultimately unsuccessful campaign to secede from their black-led town.
A ballot initiative to partition off the most affluent and overwhelmingly white populated sections of Stockbridge from its predominately black communities failed in Tuesdays midterm voting. By a vote of 3,473 in favor and 4,545 in opposition, residents in the existing Henry County city rejected a controversial proposal to carve out a new town to be called Eagles Landing from within its boundaries.
Like the states gubernatorial election, where issues of voter suppression and bigoted robocalls provided a racist backdrop to otherwise high-minded campaign themes, the Eagles Landing effort drew heavily upon white residents rejection of black political leadership, while claiming that their real motive was economic development for the city.
Secessionist movements are a real thing in various parts of the United States, where groups of like-minded people seek to withdraw from their communities when social, racial, religious, or other cultural changes occur not to their liking. For example, a Texas group was inspired by the 2016 British vote to leave the European Union, prompting the Texas Nationalist Movement to attempt a so-called Texit effort, which drew a rebuke from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

(82,849 posts)Just the more affluent white parts of town were voting on this proposal.
But sometimes people surprise you, even pleasantly, and the folks voting turned it down. No Cheesecake Factory for Stockbridge, I guess.

(7,850 posts)the land at the bottom of my street was finally developed (I live on the Texas-Mexico border)..the new homes were huge and the people who bought those homes were very white....the residents on my part of the street were/are a mix of Hispanic and anglo professionals..doctors, lawyers, teachers, business owners, etc..as soon the new extension built out I got a notice that the "new" people petitioned the city for permission to install a privacy gate...and it had temporarily been approved pending neighborhood input...so I set up a conference call with the city presentative...I asked him if he had ever driven my street...answer was no...I asked him if the city would continue to provide services..water, gas, electricity etc to the restricted gated area...answer was yes...I then told the city representative that I and my fellow neighbors would go door to door during the next election and make sure that he would not get re-elected..a week later we got a letter saying that upon careful consideration the city council had decided to deny permission for a privacy gate...that wasn't the end...the city representative had given my number to the guy who had been the "gatekeeper" and I got a call...he started out so nice and so understanding and then said all the newbies wanted was to keep their homes and families safe from brown thieves and rapists (sound familiar?) so I asked the bigoted creep if that would extend to their brown maids, brown nannies , brown yardmen, and brown pool boys?...needless to say never heard from the privacy gate guy again...
