The White House Correspondents Association used to control credentialing of reporters, discipline, advocacy, and all matters pertaining to coverage of the WH by the press.
Several decades ago, that authority was ceded to the White House Press Office.
HUGE MISTAKE.
In contrast, reporters covering Congress have their access and privileges codified in law.
Reporters covering the White House have no such protection. And this White House has made a mockery of the relationship between the press and the administration by allowing credentials to shills, stooges and even White Nationalists in an attempt to dilute the power of the press and the Constitutional right of the people to question their government.
This credentialing authority MUST BE RETURNED to the WHCA.
And access must be codified in law.
See the FB page "People's Bill Of Rights For White House Transparency" to support the effort to strengthen protection for our watchdog press. Those men and women stand between the people and tyranny every day. Stand up with them!

(13,570 posts)Reporters covering Congress are guaranteed access by law. They have protections.
But not reporters covering the White House.
All it takes is one little law.
And some teeth in the members of the White House Correspondents Association.
The persistence of Jim Acosta, resulting in his credentials pulled, is a catalyst.
Members of the press see in stark terms the fragility of their access.
As should we all, now.
A tyrant at the podium is the warning. Where would we be without our watchdog press??

(2,120 posts)Even one little law requires the President's signature to become law.
Or do you think we would have the super majority needed to override a veto in both houses?

Incremental steps are often required in order to make progress. That ought to be obvious.

(82,849 posts)How would the next Gannon/Guckert (Remember him from the Bush years?) get a pass if he had to go through all that peer association folderol?

And yes. This measure would have stopped him.
