(1,584 posts)I weep for this family and the young lady who hit them. Such a tragedy...I think I need to take a break from the news. So much sadness.

(269,157 posts)The northbound bus, driven by 46-year-old Robert Reid, had activated its stop sign, an indication for vehicles not to pass as children get on or off, authorities said. Moments later, that's when the four kids were struck by a southbound 2017 Toyota Tacoma, police said.
"The pickup truck was traveling the opposite direction and struck the children as they were crossing," Indiana state police Capt. David Bursten told NBC News. "That's why they have this big flashing stop arm telling drivers to stop."
The victims were struck within sight of their homes, according to Bursten.
The killed and injured students were boarding their Tippacanoe Valley School Corporation bus when the fatal crash unfolded, according to state police Sgt. Tony Slocum.
They were standing on the west side of the road getting onto the bus, which did have a stop arm activated as required by law and unfortunately, for whatever reason, the person failed to stop and caused three fatalities and at least one injury at this time," Slocum told NBC Chicago.

-----------
Way too many drivers violate the road code.

I have been yelled at and honked at by other drivers behind me, for stopping ..even called a muslim for stopping and allowing kids to cross

(269,157 posts)There are several schools on our route back home from our walking strip. I am amazed at the way people ignore crossings.

(1,822 posts)Driver is 24, and I saw someone on Facebook say that she was on her way to the hospital because her dad was in emergency surgery. Obviously this is unsubstantiated but something Ive heard. Still how the heck do you not see a bus stopped before dawn? Cant imagine the pain these parents are going through.

(28,810 posts)my youngest said he almost drove past a school bus. the situation is identical to this one. the kids tend to trust that the cars will stop for the bus. there are flashing lights, a stop sign extended on an arm on the bus. but this happens. i just felt as if he didn't take it seriously enough, but children have been killed here in NC the same way since we lived here and in fact, while he was on the bus one day he saw a girl very nearly get hit the same way.
so i just told him about this tragedy. it's unimaginable. i lost 1 child and it's the worst thing that ever happened in my life. People who never lost a child don't really get how bad it is. likewise I cannot fathom the depth of this family's pain.

(146,325 posts)shouldn't just be charged with a misdemeanor offense, in my opinion. It should be a felony.
Some people routinely ignore those signals. Others are not paying attention. Children die.
I have zero sympathy for anyone who breaks that very sensible law. Typically, when I encounter a stopped bus with red lights flashing, it takes only about 30 seconds for the process to be completed. Who is in that much of a hurry?
Stop for School Buses!

Was the driver drunk or on auto pilot or something?
