If they suffer defeats worse than they imagine, Donald Trump will no longer be considered an asset to them. He will become a liability. The last thing Republicans would want would be for him to be at the top of the ticket in 2020.
Nobody knows how this election will turn out but I am hoping for a massacre.

(6,377 posts)I could see them trying to put tons of distance between themselves and him, especially when 2020 rolls around. He's going to want to campaign in certain cities and swing states, and I could see candidates telling him to stay away.

But I expect a heck of a lot of mental gymnastics and gaslighting involved in the separation process so they can hold on to the radical right support.

(52,243 posts)they can't abandon donnie unless and until foxnews abandons donnie because any republican who speaks out against donnie will get primaried by a donnie loyalist.
in many districts/states, the general election is a forgone conclusion, so winning the primary is the only thing that matters. in more contested general elections, republicans choosing an ever-more extreme loyalist might well cost them the general, but they aren't currently set up to care about such things at primary time.
only if foxnews abandons donnie will it become safe for republicans to abandon him.
there's a *small* chance that mueller's report may cause that to happen, but it remains very unlikely.
imho, there's a high probability donnie will be renominated without contest and go on to lose the general election by a sizable margin.

(14,565 posts)There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING he has said or done that indicates he is going to walk away from this.
There INFINITELY greater likelyhood is that he does not leave on his own accord IF we manage to win in 2020, or after 2024 ...
They are NOT going to "turn" on him 1) 95% of them are as sick as he is 2) MANY of them are dirty in a way that they know their best chance to not be dealt with is with him as the country's dictator.
They WILL universally either say nothing, or most of them will ball around about the evil democrats that are responsible for any economic downturns, any scandals that come to light or are dealt with.

(10,878 posts)To be huge, we need a larger than expected youth and Hispanic turnout in southern and western states that have Senate and Gov races
If we somehow retake the Senate or lose only one seat couple with winning 8-10 Gov races and win 35-40 House seats......Trump may just resign before Muellers report comes out. 🤗

(11,738 posts)Trump has developed a loyal base that will likely not support any other Republican that doesn't have as extreme rhetoric as he does. I think that the Republicans have painted themselves into a corner with Trump.
He is the logical (extreme but logical) end to conservative ideology in the United States. This is what Republicans since Nixon have been pushing for albeit far more subtly. They want to wealthy to be left alone and used religious bigots and racists to accomplish that. Now the bigots and racists want their recompense.
I do hope that Republicans are swept from power in a very significant way that sends a clear message.

(6,829 posts)There will be a concerted effort to say various races were thrown/illegitimate. Violence will be aimed at the "illegitimate"Dem winners like McCaskill, Gillem, Sinema etc.
There will be an effort to try to keep them from assuming their seats.
Rs are no longer playing by the old rules. We are fools to think they'll honor the results

(54,399 posts)Don't forget, there hardly ARE any real Republicans left, just the crazies that still proudly wear the party label. If Trump were to declare war against Mexico and Canada, and their children are killed in action and their houses demolished, they will say it would have been worse if Trump hadn't been there for them. We are NOT talking about rational people here, and irrational people are far more prevalent than we wish they were.
Quite aside from that, I'm betting the Republican Electoral Fraud Machine is in high gear, and will limit damage to them. Voter disenfranchisement, pre- or poorly- (it doesn't matter, as long as they do the programming) programmed electronic voting machines and corrupt local officials, such as Scott Walker's girlfriend in Waukesha County, will all compensate for numbers that say they will take a beating. That is only if our elections were honest, fairly held affairs. That can no longer be said to be the case.
