GOP Lawmakers Push Back On Trump's Plan To Scrap Birthright Citizenship

By Kate Riga

October 30, 2018 9:56 am

At least three Republican lawmakers are already pushing back on President Donald Trump’s dubious claim that he can roll back birthright citizenship, a right currently enshrined in the 14th Amendment, by executive order.

From a Michigan Republican congressman:

A president cannot amend Constitution or laws via executive order. Concept of natural-born citizen in #14thAmendment derives from natural-born subject in Britain. Phrase “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” excludes mainly foreign diplomats, who are not subject to U.S. laws.

From a Florida Republican congressman:

Birthright citizenship is protected by the Constitution, so no @realDonaldTrump you can’t end it by executive order. What we really need is broad immigration reform that makes our country more secure and reaffirms our wonderful tradition as a nation of immigrants. https://t.co/7xlbfrt6rW

From a Pennsylvania Republican congressman:

We all know challenges of suburban R’s. The bloc of competitive R held districts less impacted by POTUS thus far are those w high # of immigrants. So now POTUS, out of nowhere, brings birthright citizenship up. Besides being basic tenet of America, it’s political malpractice.

3. Proper immigration reform in some manner is probably needed, but there doesn't seem to be ...

any true interest on the part of rump in doing so. rump simply wants the issue there as campaign fodder and has already signaled that he wouldn't support what Congress has done so far in reform efforts.

The folks I do know that have immigrated to this country legally have paid every dime back to the government that they got in the manner of aid (Bosnians are the ones I know in particular, especially in STLMO, we have a huge Bosnian population). Thus, to blame these immigrants for all sorts of wrong doing and sponging off taxpayers is incorrect.

Also, those immigrants I know from overseas have always spoken very highly of this country and are very patriotic, perhaps even more so than a lot of Americans I've seen.

We do seem to get those who do come overseas for a short while just to have their babies born here. There have been articles on TV of the Chinese and/or Russians (perhaps other nationalities too) coming here just to get their babies born here so they'll be US citizens. I don't really understand why they would do this, but it does happen. I'm sure that this isn't such an overwhelming significant statistically abnormal number that it would factor into any consideration of redoing the constitutional 14th amendment.

rump in no shape, manner, or thought has such authority, as one of these repugs said as posted in the OP. Birthright citizenship is protected by the Constitution.
