Helping the stranger is a religious tradition in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.

Helping strangers is praiseworthy, and can be an act of genuine religious belief. There are other religious groups besides HIAS which help immigrants.

But in this case HIAS was selectively demonized for helping strangers, and Jewish people punished for their kindness. In the morally inverted and perverted world of Donald Trump, being kind to strangers is a threat that we need to be defended against.

Can people see this for what it is? It would certainly help if religious communities would offer some clarification on this, and teach that helping strangers who are fleeing danger in their countries is an act of love and devotion.

That is why modern day fake Christians won't have anything to do with it. It says nothing about that in the Republican playbook.
