USA Gymnastics national tumbling team coach Sergio Galvez has resigned his position ahead of next months World Championships in Russia, pending an investigation into report filed with the U.S. Center for Safe Sport.
Galvezs resignation was forced by USA Gymnastics board of directors and Safe Sport placed an interim measure restriction on Galvez for allegations of misconduct last Wednesday. USA Gymnastics and Safe Sport have not elaborated on the nature of the allegations.
Galvez was scheduled to lead Team USA at the World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in St. Petersburg Nov. 7-10. Sergio will no longer travel with the team to Russia, Jacqui Godfrey, USA Gymnastics trampoline and tumbling director, wrote in an email to athletes and coaches. The USA Gymnastics Board of Directors determined that this action was necessary to maintain a safe environment for the athletes during the U.S. Center for Safe Sports investigation, in adherence with USA Gymnastics bylaws, Godfrey wrote in the email obtained by the Orange County Register. USA Gymnastics is committed to athletes safety at all times, and it is committed to acting responsibly on claims of misconduct.
We understand that this news may be upsetting for many of you, especially in Tumbling. We are here to support you, and we will let you all know as soon as we have further updates.
Galvez did not respond to a request for comment.
