63-year-old Greentown woman charged in racist letter incident

Parts of the letter were quoted in the affidavit, which removed the racist vulgarities used by Cantwell.

“No N---- wanted in this neighborhood-THIS IS A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD-some people find N-----Stressful,” Cantwell wrote, capitalizing the racist insult.

Another paragraph began: “YOUR N---- KID IS NOT WELCOME.”

The final paragraph noted: “YOU CAN SELL YOUR HOUSE AND MAKE MONEY ON IT RIGHT NOW,” and, “BY THE WAY HOPE YOU HAVE DEEP POCKETS.”

The letter, noted the affidavit, contained several racial claims about stress-related health issues and supposed bullying and battering incidents that led to family trauma and even a separate comment about the property having septic issues.

On Oct. 15, the father informed law enforcement that he suspected Cantwell was responsible for the incident. He was previously told by the home’s seller that Cantwell was opposed to the family moving into the neighborhood because of their black son, the man explained.

Investigators, who first believed the letter was written by juveniles, later obtained text messages that had been sent by Cantwell to another person, whose name was retracted from the affidavit.

“I am stressing now that we are going to get black neighbors,” Cantwell texted. “I am hoping that more people look at the house and an all-white family are the ultimate buyers. I am afraid the stress of black neighbors could put me in the hospital.

“My blood pressure is elevated just thinking about the possibility.”

According to police, Cantwell, in an Oct. 18 interview, admitted to writing the letter out of anger and toilet-papering the yard, again justifying her actions by referencing past incidents she said caused her family harm.

“I mean, the blacks get away with it every time,” Cantwell told an investigator, according to the affidavit.

“Just rage, I was trying to vent,” she added about the toilet-papering.

Cantwell later told the investigator: “I was just trying to let them know that they weren’t really … welcome as far as us. … I just needed to let off some steam and it was the – I’m not a violent person so I didn’t think it was any big deal.”

They will only have one black neighbor whom, if they get know, might be one of their best neighbors.

A white person who loses her shit and browns out when faced with an ordinary situation that involves minorities.

Don't underestimate how much damage they can do, especially when a community is invested in removing minorities from their neighborhoods.

is her tRump red hat. Oh, plus a religious cross. With HER living in the neighborhood, maybe the black family WILL have second thoughts. Talk about "there goes the neighborhood" She is the blight in that one.

The key to breaking these red counties is to make them more diverse. Reverse the white flight patterns that created them. They have an entire subculture that they want to protect because they game the system to stay on top and in control. And that should scare everyone if it's true that all politics are local. They need these footholds to launch much bigger campaigns.

They are going to try to do everything they can to push out all minorities that don't bend their way. So, we could use a little support.

The Marion Chronicle printed several right wing letters from another racist lady from Greentown trashing Hillary and Democrats. I got so sick of them I cancelled my subscription 3 years ago.

'They deserve better': Greentown residents rally around family targeted by racist letter

GREENTOWN – Susan Tobin said she was shocked and saddened when she heard about a letter left on the door of a Greentown home that contained derogatory racial comments towards the family’s adopted black child.

“We were all really surprised,” she said. “It’s not like that in our community. I’m not surprised that there is racism, but to have it in your backyard in a small community is unexpected.”

Howard County deputies said the letter was found on Oct. 13 on a home the family had recently purchased at the intersection of 600 East and 100 North, but the family hadn’t moved into yet. Deputies are now investigating the letter as a hate crime and intimidation case.

The incident immediately resonated with Tobin, who moved to Greentown 17 years ago and has adopted five children. She also has an African American daughter.

When her daughter was in school at Eastern Howard School Corporation, she was one of only three black kids in the district, Tobin said. That led to some odd looks and questions from other students, but never racist comments.

So when Tobin heard about the letter, she knew she had to do something.
