O'Rourke picks up third Texas newspaper endorsement over Cruz

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 10/27/18 03:09 PM EDT

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the leading newspaper in the third-largest county in Texas, on Friday endorsed Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D) in his Senate race against incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R).

“U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz represent the hard left and right of American politics,” the editorial board wrote in their endorsement. “Neither stands in the middle ground, where the real work is done to lead America. But only O’Rourke seems interested in making deals or finding middle ground. That is why the El Paso Democrat would make the best senator for Tarrant County’s future, and the future of Texas,” the editorial board continued.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted that although O’Rourke’s “new way” campaign against politics-as-usual has captured attention and money, the paper added that much of what he says, particularly about immigration and healthcare, sounds “like what Texas business conservatives used to say before the emergence of New York Republican Donald Trump.”

“U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says we shouldn’t deport Dreamer students over their parents’ mistakes. Former Gov. Rick Perry, now energy secretary, has said a border wall ‘doesn’t make sense,’” the editorial board wrote. “President George W. Bush endorsed a path to legal status for those who came illegally but worked peacefully, supported the economy and showed good character.”

Ft Worth is more conservative than Dallas, so I wasn't sure this endorsement was coming. I'm glad it did.

And chose Romney in 2012. They did endorse Obama in '08 though. They're kind of mixed, leaning right overall since Reagan.

Since he ran in 2012 when they endorsed Romney, my guess is that they endorsed Cruz too, if anyone. The Democratic candidate, Paul Sadler, was relatively unknown and had only served a few years in the TX house. He wasn't a strong candidate. That being said, Cruz pretty much just rode Romney's coattails. Romney got 57%. Cruz got 56%. He's on his own this time. While he won the 2016 TX primary, he got less than 44%, which means 56% of Texas Republicans wanted someone else. He's popular with the GOP, but not THAT popular.

Already has: DMN, SA-EN, Houston Chronicle...and Longview (Conservative area)

I think he's picked up other papers too.

Longview complained that he was absent from the senate and was using it as a stepping stone to run for president.
