(14,532 posts)In this day and age, she knows it is racist. She chose to engage in a racist act.

(1,846 posts)The party was themed on the movie so she picked a character.
Should she have used blackface? No.
I'm just not ready to fire people for being socially colossally stupid..
Unless she has exhibited some other racist tendencies, my feeling is the embarrassment ought to be enough..
let's move on.

(1,846 posts)It never ceases to amaze me how even on this progressive site, people assume they know a damned thing about you from almost no information.
If you read what I said, "absent other racist tendencies" she should be allowed to keep her job.
I didn't say what she did was OK.
Neither did I say it should be tolerated.
What I did say is that if she's just socially colassally stupid, the public embarrassment ought to be enough....i.e., a teaching moment.
There simply has to be room in this country for second chances for folks who just made a dumb mistake.
All these pictures of others who are clearly racist do nothing to dismiss the argument that we ought to have room for a little social embarrassment helping someone understand what's appropriate and what's not.

(53,410 posts)When would you say shes acting inappropriately? Would you be ok having her teach your kids?
GitRDun
(1,846 posts)but if she just made a foolish mistake and apologized for it I would be fine moving on.
you are your children's most important role models

(53,410 posts)Do you just not get the facts here?
At what age is she accountable for her actions?
GitRDun
(1,846 posts)Yours is immediate dismissal.
Mine is self reflection, learning, understanding, apologizing, perhaps even teaching her students what she's learned.
If there's no room on our side for people coming to grips with their own fallacies without financial and social ruin, we are just as bad as those we criticize.

(53,410 posts)Got it.
Please read what I said.
Accountability can mean something other than losing your job

(53,410 posts)I wouldnt allow her to reach children. Shes not fit.

(1,846 posts)she made to wear blackface.
If there was posted evidence she otherwise had exhibited racist tendencies, I would agree with you.
Absent some posted evidence that she's racist, I would be willing to see how she responds before I fired her.
That's just me...
