The Republicans were the people who stood for The Republic, which had a constitution and held democratic elections. The Nationalists were the coalition of wealthy land owners, Industrialists, the Roman Catholic Church, and a small minority of the Military. In fact, the army that Franco raised was largely a mercenary army brought in from outside Spain and paid for by the coalition of wealthy families who "wanted their country back."
So when you hear Trump say, I am a Nationalist," what he is really saying is, "I am a Fascist."
Just like Franco, Mussolini, and Hitler. When we finally start believing him?
