Mexico offers temporary permits to caravan migrants seeking asylum

Move is being seen as attempt to step up efforts to stop large group heading for the US

“This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws, and it’s a first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico,” Peña Nieto said in a pre-recorded address broadcast on Friday.

To qualify for the scheme he called “Estas en Tu Casa” (“Make Yourself at Home”) migrants had to be in the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, the president said.

Mexico’s government has said that more than 1,700 people in the convoy have registered for asylum, while others have returned home. Estimates on the size of the group vary.

Trumpy not going to be happy that he won't have those caravanders at his doorstep to kick around anymore.

It's like throwing a party and nobody comes.

Thanks Mexico!!!!

There is still at least 1000 miles to travel before reaching a crossing. Even more if the target crossing is in California. Some have, apparently, accepted Mexico's offer. Last report I saw showed the numbers of those continuing reduced by 50%.

Moving northwest across Mexico is not without its daunting challenges, especially if you're mostly traveling on foot. I've been to much of that area. I would not want to walk across hundreds of miles of it, at a minimum.

Some, no doubt, will make it to the US border. Most, however, will probably not.

Those folks need help, not the hatred spewing from that thing in our White House.

The Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, said that migrants wishing to obtain temporary identification documents, jobs or education for their children could do so by registering for asylum in southern Mexico.

But after one of the caravan's longest days of walking and hanging from passing trucks, the bulk of the migrants were boisterous Friday evening in their refusal to accept anything less than safe passage to the U.S. border.

"Thank you!" they yelled as they voted to reject the offer in a show of hands in the town of Arriaga. They then added: "No, we're heading north!"

Sitting at the edge of the edge of the town square, 58-year-old Oscar Sosa of San Pedro Sula, Honduras concurred.

"Our goal is not to remain in Mexico," Sosa said. "Our goal is to make it to the (U.S). We want passage, that's all."

It would be creepy beyond belief if all the migrants wanted exactly the same thing.

I'm weird; I dream of a day when national borders are as insignificant to personal lives as state borders are here and now.

(Confession: I didn't click the link you provided. ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS are off my list since their obsession with postures over issues in the year leading up to the other day of infamy).

I don't understand what you are saying. In theory, don't all migrants seeking asylum just want to go somewhere where their lives aren't in danger? It's not like they are just relocating for the hell of it.

Some of the migrants will accept Mexico's offer. Some will not. That's normal human behavior, therefore, not much in the way of news.

The potential (contrived) conflict at the U.S. border could be big news. This is what TrumPutin wants. He is again trying to control the news for his goals, with no regard for the effects on people.

Especially considering Trump's and the Republicans' posture on this.

It could be that they've been told the U.S. is the 'land of milk and honey' and they consider Mexico's offer to be bread and water by comparison.

Consider the gold rushes in our past. Many were fueled by tales of gold being littered around the land, there for the taking. Even a lush, fertile valley along the way wouldn't compete with that fantasy for a lot of people.

GOPers, of course, want it to be a caravan of demons that only they can stop. It has to first crowd out other news and be made to appear as a juggernaut that Democrats will assist. This allows TrumPutin's storm troopers to swoop in and save MAGAts -- just in time to stop all those illegal voters from flooding the polls and making a blue wave.
