It's a dark forty-degree day with steady rain
I head out to knock doors in the afternoon
But the work is slow because I have to keep my list and literature as dry as possible
And under these conditions "dry as possible" often means "soggy"
I limit how many flyers I have in my hand at one time but more than once I drop a handful so now my car floor is littered with unusably wet lit
I get most of the way through my list but run out of time in the late afternoon because I have to be available for an unrelated phone call
At home I dry out for a while before finally learning the phone call has been postponed until tomorrow afternoon
Okay! in the height of rush hour, I head back to the turf to finish it
The weather looks to be clearing when I start my drive but when I'm finally back in the neighborhood a half hour before sundown the rain's steady again
I always really dislike knocking doors when it's getting dark outside
The first few names aren't home
Finally somebody answers. She comes to the door with someone
Hi! I'm a volunteer for the Democratic Party! I'm looking for so-and-so
They're surprised and invite me in. I decline, since I'm dripping and their home looks neat and clean
I offer our recommendations for the election. She's already voted
But he hasn't. "I'll take that!" he says and grabs the endorsements
He really wants those recommendations
They both thank me profusely for walking house to house in the dripping cold
As twilight falls, everyone I meet is pleasant and grateful that I rang their bell
In the end, I'm home well after dark, wet, slightly chilled and tired and glad I went back out

(118,295 posts)Just think of all the hands that will be reaching for a dream
Think of all the dreams that could come true:
yes, if the hands we're reaching with could come together, joining me and you
When it comes to thinking of tomorrow, we must protect our fragile destiny
