5. Trump and the GOP have shifted to a more overtly bigoted stance.

The GOP has been reticent since the 1970's to condemn White Supremacist violence as "terrorism". That was usually reserved for leftist organizations like Cubans hijacking planes, racial equality groups like the Black Panthers who were more militant, and middle eastern organizations like the PLO. They reluctantly condemned the KKK but then the KKK was a pariah organization during the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

The GOP now only sees terrorism when it comes to Black and Brown people. Middle eastern, desperate immigrants, Black Lives Matter...those are terrorist groups to the GOP. Radical Whites are still fighting for White Supremacy so the GOP can't condemn it or even label it because the GOP and Trump are counting on White Supremacy to keep them in power.
