16. She's a 'government' employee. My guess is that she probably didn't pay for the ticket at all.

The Government paid for it. The government negotiates contracts with several major airlines for 'government employees' flying on 'official business'. Those contracts with the airlines are renegotiated every few years. When an employee needs to fly on official business they get that rate whether they book that reservation 2 months in advance or 2 hours in advance. However, only a limited number of seats on each flight are reserved on each flight at that government rate. What that number is I don't know, but I know that sometimes when I had to book a flight 'for official business' I would get a message that there are no seats available, yet if I went on line and checked seats available commercially, vs through the official government website, there would be plenty of seats available on that flight. So you would have to start the process over and request an earlier or later flight. If you still can't find one, you complete everything that you can complete and submit your travel authorization for approval, and the government travel office will eventually find you a seat on a flight and get back to you later. Often times I had to go to the airport with no assigned seat, but there would eventually be one available for me prior to boarding, which means I was probably a priority "Stand By".

I normally fly Delta comfort. Or fancy-pants coach as I call it. It might add $100-200 per flight.

Occasionally, very occasionally, I will find a first class domestic for around the same price. And always at shitty times that most people will not fly.

That said, I only fly 2-3 times a year.

On the occasions I fly International it is coach or coach comfort.

I refuse to fly value airlines. They treat their employees like shit and I know 2 people who work in airports. They will never fly value airlines.

But I understand that the definition of rich is elastic and to some I may well be. But we are lower upper middle class by any definition. However, we are in our 50s, childless and good savers. 20 year ago my flight options were way different. Basically, I could not afford to fly.

Regardless, I can’t see any trump flying less than first.
