Newt was the first prominent politician in our era to criminalize our politics. Many here probably are too young to know how important Newt is in the creation of this Trump world. Newt started attacking Dems as criminals. Newts advance in political strategy was to turn Orwell into science. He had pollsters test the impact of word choice. Death Tax replacing Estate Tax was one of the successes. Newt found that describing Dems in criminal terms worked in his test panels. So off to the races. Newt learned that the right words work whether true or not. Newt learned to ignore truth and focus on verbal manipulation. Newts science of Orwell has spawned the magabomber. Trump stands on the shoulders of a giant, Newt Gingrich.

There used to be a documentary about him, a conversation with his mother, she knew he was a wicked child and recognized him as an intimidating manipulator at an early age. I saw it in college, haven't been able to find it since.

Not only Millennials but even some older wingnuts don't know where the "DemoCRAT party" meme (as opposed to DemocratIC) came from and claim they see no irritating component to it. Yes, Frank LUNTZ got his career boost from The Grinch when that previous incarnation of the TeaBaggers took over the House, with his gimmick of focus groups giving their reactions to words, and "DemoCRAT party" was deemed to ring bad with people. I say that part of the negative emotion had to do with the aural dissonance of the ungrammatical construction.

That's the phrase he used to characterize Democrats and liberals, and advocated every Republican follow suit, at every opportunity. And that started even before Bill Clinton was elected.

Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh were a 1-2 punch to accomplish that, Newt working on the politicians & party people and Limbaugh exhorting to the general public for hours on end, everywhere. It was Newt's 1994 House majority that made Limbaugh an honorary member and honored him as "the majority maker".
